Hunt or be Hunted
Man I'm tellin you what, what is this world coming to? We got a plant here in town called Honeywell. This tells you what Honeywell is. Honeywell is an industry leader in manufacturing AccuDri sulfur hexafluoride. The Honeywell plant in Metropolis, Illinois supplies customers worldwide with millions of pounds of AccuDri SF6 every year. Honeywell supplies SF6 in a wide variety of package types, from a 10 pound cylinder to a 26,000 pound tube trailer. Honeywell offers expert technical service to all SF6 customers to assist in reducing emissions and improving safety. Anyway At 6:30 last night they locked out all 230 Union Workers and are letting scabs work instead! Instead of typing it all watch this video. Not to get way political, but the unions of today are not what the unions were when the were first implemented.

Look what's happened to the auto workers, steel workers and mine workers, to name 3 of the best examples. They've gone and priced themselves out of jobs. A job is only worth the price that someone is willing to do it for. There are a ton of union jobs out there (and mine is one of them) that you can find a lot of people wiling to do for less money. It's only a matter of time before you find yourself with a union card and no job.

Who's fault is it that folks are locked outside? Mangagement, or labor, or the "scabs"? I can't answer that, I'm not up there, but my guess is one or both of the first two, not the third. Tell a guy that's trying to bring home a check for his family he's the problem there, and he'll have some choice words for you. Not trying to take sides, I have no idea what the issues are, but I don't think your anger is focused in the right direction. Maybe I'm wrong... I also agree with Chris & Strut. Within the text of the article you posted it appears the company has been operating at a loss. Companies just can't do that for too long, especially these days. Recent history of unions in general have shown as a whole they are not sympathetic toward the problem of a company needing to be profitable. These are still hard times and credit is extremely tight. I for one would be real ticked at the union. According to the article, they're the one that decided not to continue negotiations this week. Appears from the outside looking in, their plans for the holiday weekend are more important than representing union members.
Newarcher
I guess that makes us even because I hate unions. IMHO nothing more than organized crime....I am all for fair wages and benefits but have no use for unions. I can't tell you how many calls I heard on financial planner radio shows from people with high school diplomas that took the auto buyouts to retire/be laid off and then found themselves jobs making the $70K a year they were making before. No offense to any here...union members are honorable people and some can't get jobs without joining for their particular field but as for the union machine..hate it. dbHunterNY
Not getting into the Union debate, I don't think I could blame the "scabs" for this mess. I don't know all the details, but I'm sure they weren't organized and forced themselves in there. They saw the opportunity and took it. With a situation that messy too, I'm sure they didn't have much of a job, if any at all, going. Same as the union worker, they've got a family to feed too. JimT
If I was unemployed and was offered a job I would take it. Even if it meant walking threw a bunch of picketers. If I had to guess the union probably wanted something that Honeywell would not offer. I would also guess that maybe the union was pondering a strike. I find it hilarious that Honeywell probably booted them before they could strike. If anyone, I mean anyone walks off from their job, they should never be allowed to return. Most union jobs pay well and have good benefits. Better then the average non union job. If that is not enough to stay on the job then you deserve to be unemployed. Unions had their day and were needed at one time. Not any more. Look what they did to GM..........

mikebohio
before i got into the union i had no medical coverage no life insurance and no money. there is nothing wrong with making a fair wage for job. companies cry about losing money want to cut workers pay and bennifits while there executives make millions. people cant raise families on minimum wage with no medical. i understand that alot of people are laid off now but the surplus of willing workers doesnt mean companies should be able to under pay them just because they are desperate. unions help insure a fair wage. no union is perfect but ill take my chances. the union has been good to me so far.
