bluelund79
I am very new to crossbows, and know almost absolutely nothing about them.I just had spinal decompression surgery on 3 vertebre and had most of L5 disk removed, so vertical bows are out for awhile. Other than the usual you get what you pay for, what can I expect from a middle of the road xbow package? I understand the range is the same a vertical bow, but for starters, does the factory string/cable usually stretch like most vertical companies? Are they relatively safe when cocked (as long as finger is off trigger obviously). Do they really require xbow specific broadheads, or can I use my Magnus Buzzcuts? Are the reddots or scopes better to use with xbows? If I missed anything, please feel free to fire away. Its not my favorite question to ask, but i can't miss too much of hunting season, besides my family, its what I live for and I hate eating beef-my family just finished the 2nd deer I shot last season to include the sausage.....Thanks, Eric
jesse8953
I have a horton like this one.http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0039051417382a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=horton&sort=all&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23 I like the reddot scope.I use 100gr.expandables,I have owned mine 4 years, killed 3 deer and have replaced the string 1 time.Still have the original cables. You will still have to be careful when cocking the crossbow.I had back surgery January of 2009.I bought a cocking string that takes away 50% of the cocking force.http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0079965419185a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=horton&sort=all&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23 You could buy a hand crank but I heard they are pretty noisy.Go to cabelas, bass pro and gander mt. and see which one you like. There are lots of brands out there.Horton was in my price range and I am very pleased with it.I hope this helps. LifeNRA
Thanks Jesse, any others out there using these "taboo" shooting platforms.... There is nothing wrong with ANYBODY using a Xbow! I could care less about the guy down the ways using one! With that said, go and shoot as many as you can get your hands on. Just like a compound, they all are a bit different. Some are loud, some are quiet. Some have lots of vibration, some have very little. But since your the one that needs it, go and shoot them! I fired a few with Dad when he went for one. I was surprised how different they are.
bluelund79
Well said NRA, thank you. Just trying to get a feel though, my doc is not allowing me to drive for another 3 weeks, and my wife doesn't think crossbow shopping is physical therapy, lol. I'll just wait about a month and then go shoot as many as I can. (for what its worth, I have no problem with any weapon, as long as its legal-just way too many persons look down on xbows and I wanted to get some feedback on which ones actually live up to their claims on the websites, just like what I do when I am looking for a compound)
Tominator
I fired a few with Dad when he went for one. I was surprised how different they are. Man, you got that right. I shot one briefly when I had my abdominal surgery, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with that thing. I opted to heal up a little before heading back to the woods. mikebohio
i use both myself i had problems with fixed blades planing on me switched to rage and have super tight groups wouldnt attempt anything over 40 yards because of the noise have some arthritis and that usually dictates wich bow i take out but i like the tenpoint i have i got the 3 dot red dot scope and i would recomend you get a hand cranck for cocking. you can also have someone cock it for you before you go in the woods. and for gods sake dont feel like your commiting an imortal sin. its just another way to legaly harvest dear.
