In the driveway this morning

Well done...a little close to the house for comfort.

This morning a friend and I went on a good mountain bike ride...happened along a technical section and a black snake was up in a tree around head height...the world is now rid of a cottonmouth & a black snake!

one less snake.. a pretty big one and so close to the house.

Real close to the house!

He was hiding under my wife's car 5 ft from the garage door (which was open! yikes!). I screamed at my wife to close the garage door before he slithered in there.

Granted some people are very afraid of snakes but they all have a purpose here. As far as poisinous snakes I will leave them alone unless they pose a drirect threat to my kids around the house, other wise I leave them alone. Black snakes especially, they are more beneficial alive than dead. They not onl eat other snakes but rats and other critters as well and they can't do that dead.

The only good kind of snake is a dead snake! :D

+1

And that's from someone who has no fear of them. Used to go catching them as a kid. I just don't like to look at them. Granted, a black snake will eat a barn rat every other week or so. But he is about as effective at keeping a barn free of rodents as a spoon is at keeping Lake Erie free of water. I'll set a rat trap or box of Decon and whack the snake. ;)

Black racers eat venomous snakes like copperheads and cottonmouths. They are good to have around.

We get em close around the house here from time to time too Leo. Have had a few copperheads in the garage. Had a 3 ft long water moccasin under my mower about 3 weeks ago. Mower was in the shed where the kids had been earlier on that day, oldest had just fed the animals and had been all around the mower in flip flops. Usually I grease all the fittings prior to mowing but was in a hurry and skipped it that afternoon, had I greased the mower gage wheels my hands would have been right there where he was laying. Funny how things go sometimes.

Moth balls seem to work for helping keep the snakes away from the house and shed, never put any out this spring here this year.

That's the situation here. All of my direct neighbors have young children and they they play in my front yard almost daily. I am not a blood thirsty snake killer.

Here is a black snake I found in the back yard. I don't mind having these around at all.

Sounds like you need to have a pep talk with them black racers, eh William?? :D

I've found that a .44 shotshell is at least as effective as the black racer. ;)
