problem sighting in.

I put a new nikon pro-staf 3-9x40 with Leupold high mounts on a H&R Ultra-25-06. I had the scope mounted by a local outfitter where I bought the scope. This passed weekend I took it and my nef 243 with weaver med-hi mounts and identical pro-staf. The 243, which I mounted myself, had the first shot on the paper paper and had a 3 shot 1/2" group at 100 yards.

The 25-06 never got on the paper even thought it was mounted by the outfitter and bore sighted. I put a full box of shells through the gun and finally pulled it into 25 yards and still didn't get it on the paper.

Here are some pictures of my set ups on the guns. I noticed that the scope mount on the 25 is different then the 243. It is a little longer and has some kind of adjustment screw on the end. Could this be my problem?

This is the two guns, the 243 is on top.

Here is the 25-06. Notice the longer scope mount and the space under it with the adjustment screw and set screw on the side.

Any suggestions?

Re: problem sighting in.

I see what you are talking about. It seems to me that with that set screw, the mount would not be very stable.

I cannot believe that you can't get on the paper at 25 yards. Something is really wrong with that setup!

I would take it back to the guy who mounted it. I think you have the wrong base for starters.

Not really familiar with that gun or the way a mount has to be setup!

Good luck!

I agree that base seems a little unusual. It would seem that it is not the right one for the gun. Those handi rifles should put all the shots in the same hole at 25 yards. Check to make sure if the base is correct, and something else to look for is if the rings and base remained tight. My shooting partner bought one in a 22 hornet and we were plinkin away with great accuracy and all of a sudden we couldn't hit anything. For some reason the rings came loose, but after we tightened them they have been good since.

Re: problem sighting in.

You have the correct mount for that gun. There should not be any tension on the front screw. Its just there to keep the mount from sagging in the front. Once the base is mounted, turn the screw until it just touches the barrel. I put locktite on the screw to hold it in place.

Personally, I would remount the scope myself. I never trust an idiot at a gun shop.

Bore sight the setup. Open the action and look through the bore. While it is setting on a good solid rest, adjust it until the target is centered. Without moving the gun, lift your head and look through the scope. The crosshairs should be on the target. If not, adjust the scope until it is centered on the target. Now shoot. I can get on paper the first time at 100 yards this way. You should be able to do it at 25 yards.

You should be able to keep all the bullets in one hole at 25 yards. Remember it takes 4x as many clicks at 25 yards as it does at 100 yards. If you have to move 1" at 25 yards, it takes 16 clicks.

If the gun still will not group, it has a bad scope or mounts.

Re: problem sighting in.

First off, I always start sighing in a new gun at 25 yards. Within a few shots I am on and then I move back to 75-100. That base looks right to me also. If you can pop the scope off and try it on a different gun I would do that. Just to see. If it is not that, I would change out the bases. If it aint that, it would have to be the gun. I doubt that though. Good luck, and I hope you get it figured out asap.

Re: problem sighting in.

my buddy had the same scope. he went through 3 of them before he got one that would keep them in a group at 50 yards. you may want to have your scope looked at or trade for the same one just to see if yours might be bad. good luck.

Re: problem sighting in.

With the help of the great and powerful AJ, I think I've diagnosed my problem. Aparently when the "outfitter" mounted my scope, he noticed that there was a screw loose on the mount and he tightened it all the way. Turns out the screw was only supposed to touch the barrel. It ended up bending my rail up about 1/8th". I took the rail off and you can teeder todder it back and forth on the table.

Solution- New rail ordered today. mad.gif
