Dawg
I want to move my treestand but I'm not sure if I should. Currently it is about 16 feet in the tree that is right off of a deer trail. This trail runs along side of a slight hill. When I am in the stand I am looking West toward the road I walk in on, which is about 40 yards thru the woods. I am just a touch over eye level with the road. The tree is pretty big but there's not any limbs or vegetation on it to help break up my silouette. There aren't any other trees on the same side of the trail that are any better but there are some on the other side but they are farther down the trail. That would have me shooting down a little farther. Is it best to leave the stand on the current tree, which has me facing the upward slope of the hill or move it to the other side and have me looking down? Orion_70
It would depend on where the deer are coming from or expected to come from. I would always prefer height advantage when possible for two reasons: Scent and Movement. I don't want to be eye level with a hill if the wind changes and if they happen to come from that way, they're looking down at me and easier to spot. If there's a better tree farther down the trail it may be best to move it.
Rhino
I don't like to be right on top of a trail. I prefer being at least 10 to 15 yards off to the side so deer aren't looking down the trail they are walking and looking at you or your tree too. I don't like having nothing but the trunk of a tree for cover either. If there's another option with some sort of cover off the trail I'd opt for that tree. I also would opt for being in a tree on the high side of the trail too. That's just me though.
redkneck
I agree with the above posts. I prefer to be off the trail at least ten yards and on the high side if possible (unless it's really steep). Some places it sure does suck trying to find a good tree, but at least this early you got a lot of time to make something happen even if you have to brush up a stand really good. Dawg
The stand is about 15 yards off the trail. The deer come from the North. The trail parallels the road so I'm not worried about them spotting me as they don't come in off the road......at least not the deer I have seen while on stand. There's a spot back to the North where the trail crosses an old skidder trail, that might be a good place to set up off of.

Dawg
Well hey there Dan! Good to see ya! I was thinking about you yesterday. Thanks for the advice guys!
Rhino
...and a spot where deer are consistently intersecting if possible... Yep...agreed...ups the odds, especially for rutting bucks. If it's too far away from the area you have confidence in, consider another stand set.
mikebohio
any thought on a ground blind on top of the hill
GWSmith
Corey...It's impossible to suggest anything without seeing the area. If you could get pictures from the stand to the deer travel path and a couple pictures from different areas of the deer path towards the treestand it would make a world of difference in trying to help.
