NEBRbruiser
I've been experimenting the past 4 or 5 years with many different attractants here in Nebraska. Some good, some bad as expected. What attractants and mineral mixtures have you had good luck with? I am experimenting with Dried Distillers right now. Cheap and deer seem to go crazy over it! Tominator
Pee in a bottle, let it sit in the sun for a few days, make a drag rag, then a mock scrape 20 yards from your stand. Money :gunsmilie:
Rhino
Had real good luck with just about any mineral lick in the warm/hot months for trail cam sets. They don't get used much at all during open deer seasons though. With the baiting laws here choice of attractants is very limited. With a few exceptions (deer calls & rattling) I essentially quit using the legal ones a long time ago opting to be as scent free as possible and hunt from time to time where a food source attracts them during bow season. I prefer hunting places where does are the attractant as the rut approaches. Essentially I forcus my hunting on food sources, funnels, hubs, & edges in cover to hunt where they already are used to going rather than trying to attract them to a spot. clrj3514
If we shoot a buck with a full bladder, my Grandaddy will pop it & put the pee in a bottle. Put it out during the rut really ticks bucks off

Flintlock1776
In 2009 there were several hunting magazines reporting that up to 9 states were considering banning the use of deer urine due to concerns about spreading chronic wasting disease. Pennsylvania DRN biologist was in the lead to recommend this change. Maybe 2010 magazines article will update us on this proposition by the states. Tominator
are you for real, or our you just joking.:jaw: Dead serious. Try it. To be honest, I've spooked a few deer with it, but I've attracted a lot more than I've spooked. And, I will say, I've never attracted a shooter buck using it.:robot:
Ethan Givan
Pee in a bottle, let it sit in the sun for a few days, make a drag rag, then a mock scrape 20 yards from your stand. Money :gunsmilie: He isnt joking. Ive never peed in a bottle and let it set in the sun, but I have peed directly on scrape that I have come across where I am hunting. It works. 12-point
and yes tominator is for real, peeing in a bottle is the same as buck urine bc buck urine is ammonia and after so many hours our pee turns into ammonia. Therefore instant attractant. Read your magazines
NEBRbruiser
Here alot about the Acorn Rage. Anyone using that? Also if you get a chance to look at cabelas you will find BB. This is made here in Nebraska and works real well. Would recommend it. Lot cheaper compared to many other attractants.
wtnhunt
Your own urine will work in scrapes. For minerals, we have used several, the best results we have had have come from trophy rocks. Using deer cain right now, it works fairly well.
Orion_70
I make a mineral lick using stock salt and trace mineral salt. Will add dicalcium phosphate when I can find it. Tried buck jam, was on clearance for $2.. nothing came to it
NEBRbruiser
Yes I have been experimenting with many different mixes. I used the stock salt and trace mineral one. Worked fairly well. I will say the trophy rock has been working for me for 3 years now. Hard to beat those. Problem is, most mixtures are salt based and I'm trying to get them using something with much more nutritional value and I think I have found it. A local feed store actually mixed a bunch of bags for an outfitter and I bought some he had left. This stuff has the PERFECT mixture of calcium, phos, etc, etc. Plus he only charges $15/50lb bag! Don't need to pay for the name or picture on the bag like all the other products. Also been using dried distillers. Its only $3/50lb bag and its great for top dressing corn or soybeans. Deer go crazy over it!! Anyone been using anything else?? Curious
ksmith
I work at a local feed mill here in central Ohio and i also attend college. But i have started mixing my own mixes and have got plenty of ppl in the area started on it and they seem to love it just as much as I do. I always put out trace mineral salt blocks during the spring and summer months and ill start puting out my corn mix in the early part of july and let me tell ya the deer go crazy over it. i mix up shelled corn, roasted soybeans, molasses, liquid fat and distillers grain for protien. Great feed attractant and deer also get nutritional value out of it as well. A few ppl bring over c'mere deer, acorn rage, etc to have us mix it directly in the mixer with their corn they buy and add molasses to it and they seem very pleased with the results. Hope this helps anybody that has a local feed store/company close to them that is willing to mix rations up for you. Good Luck in the up coming season. I cant wait to get in the woods!! Thanks a lot for the info. I really like your idea of the corn, soybeans, molasses, liquid fat and distillers. Anyway I could bother you for what ration you use? How much would a mill charge for a 50lb bag? roughly. My advantage is I can just go back to the farm and take some buckets of corn and beans from my dads piles

This stuff has the PERFECT mixture of calcium, phos, etc, etc. Plus he only charges $15/50lb bag! We got the calcium, phos, etc. from our local co-op and mixed our own so called perfect mineral lick mix too. It's the same mixture that's in the expensive, fancy looking 50# mineral lick bags we used in the past. Total salt content ends up being ~25%. Mixed it in the front end loader of our tractor and put it out with 5 gallon buckets. Cost $12/50# doing it that way.
ksmith
For every 500 pounds of corn i put in the mixer i put 100 pounds of distillers and 100 pounds of roasted soybeans with 5 pounds of liquid fat and 20 pounds of molasses. Thats the best ration that me and my boss which is a mutritional specialist cam up with. The deer are all over it and love it. I cant keep it out because within 3 days 2 bags that I puut out will be gone. Hope this helps you out!!
NEBRbruiser
Thanks alot for the info. I'll have to give that a try this fall after all my apples are done Gotta love apples. Anyone have anything else they want to share on attractants/minerals????

Deer go crazy over it!! Anyone been using anything else?? Curious What is dried distillers and where can someone find the stuff? Dried distillers in the byproduct of Ethanol. If your not exactly familiar with the ethanol process, they obviously use corn to make ethanol. Once through the process the biproduct has a very distint and strong smell. It actually has a smell like booze. The smell is very strong tho and the deer can smell it from a loooooong ways away. Like I mentioned earlier we have many ethanol plants in nebraska so I get mine from a local feed mill. However if you don't have any your way it will probably be pretty tough to get your hands on some with out paying a boat load for shipping costs. I will say though if you want some action on a game cam, this is the ticket! And its dirt cheap! Just doesn't have the pic of the big buck on the bag

I'd think with the molasses it would be sticky and require something like a trough type feeder???
NEBRbruiser
How do you dispense it? I'd think with the molasses it would be sticky and require something like a trough type feeder??? The molasses he is talking about is dried molasses. Great product to mix with any of your attractants. Top dress piles of corn, mix with feed, etc. Just bought a 50lb bag, $11. Another product I would recommend using instead of the overpriced stuff in a bag with a big buck on it.
coondog
I've used Acorn rage with good results also rice bran is even more powerfull than corn mix the to every doe in town will know your feeder location which will bring the boys in tow. Rice Bran is in most all of the attractants just hard to find but alot of feed mills carry it . Used deer cain with mixed results I think it depends on what all minerals are in the soil in the area. Tried several types of urine with mixed results. Tarsals from another buck work real well if they aare fresh. The trails end #307 in a bottle by the urine it smells like liquorish (sweet anais oil) works trigers curousity
