Oats or winter wheat ????

Going to plant a fall plot around our soybean/corn plot and was thinking of mixing wheat or oats with the turnips but which one or both.

My first choice would be neither. I like winter rye (rye grain, not rye grass). Will grow anywhere in just about any soil.

Yep, same here. If you can find it pennington's wintergrazer rye is a great choice.

I would plant both. Just remember that after a hard freeze or two the oats are going to die. Then you are left with only the brassicas. Winter wheat will remain green all winter. Rye is also a good choice. I tend to stick with wheat just because I have had great success with it here in Oklahoma. However, rye is suppose to be a little more winter hardy and will actually have a little longer growing period then wheat before winter dormancy. Either one will be a great choice. If you mix them with oats the oats pop up really quick and are extremely palatable during the early bow season.

I would recommend either buck Forage Oats or Elbon Rye. On good soils, I think Buck Forage Oats is the best, so if it's near beans and Corn, the BFO is the ticket and it is more drought and cold hardy than other varieties.

We have planted Buck Forage Oats several seasons with great results. I have a new plot area this year and I'm wanting to try something new, just not sure what yet.

well winter weat is a good one but it will grow way over you other crop and s will oats well i would put it acordingly so it dont kill out your main crop
