92xj
So, Maggie is absolutely in love with raw hide bones. I will not give her the normal shaped bones because when they have been chewed on for a while and get to that slimy consistancy, dogs tend to try and swallow them whole and not chew anymore. I don't want my dog choking. So, I found some long cylinder shaped ones that are very good about breaking into smaller pieces and she swallows them with ease. But the problem is, she goes through them in 15 minutes! I buy the biggest ones I can that are recommended for large 80+ pound dogs. She is medium/small at only 38 lbs right now. My question is, what brand and style of dogs bones do you give your dog, that actually last a long time and they dont choke on them. (ps, sorry for the grammar errors, was a loooooong night with 2 hours of sleep)
dogdoc
my labs love rawhide. a 12" one will last a couple hours with Belle. I give her one about every 2 weeks to help keep her teeth clean. She is 5 and I have never had to clean her teeth. I don't know of a particular brand. I get mine at Sams. BTW--I have never had a dog come into the clinic with a rawhide bone stuck in it's throat. todd
snapper
My rotty used to try and swallow them whole when they soften up...I actually had to pull one out of his mouth one time. I stopped giving them rawhides after than...stuck to pig ears for treats.
Alisha
Personally I wouldn't give rawhide at all. It's not digested well and if your dog is a power chewer they could get large pieces off of it and potentially get choked or have an intestinal blockage. I would suggest a Nylabone (souper size), a Kong, toys made by Planet Dog, etc. If you are stuck on giving her a real bone, go to a butcher and ask for a 4-5" marrow bone. DON'T buy the cooked ones at the pet store - which could possibly splinter - along with any other cooked bones which are major no-no's IMO. Also, I know a lot of people who give their dogs deer antlers to chew on. I tried to give April a pig ear as a treat and the goofy thing got choked on a huge piece she tried to swallow whole! I had to dig it out of her throat all while she was hacking and everything else! NEVER again.

92xj
Thanks for the input. I have found a solution to making the bones last a little bit longer....
