Rhino
This past Friday I went to camp to move trail cams around, glass deer, and work on some stands. After swithching cards and moving cams around early in the afternoon my son met me there to help me with my stand chores. Around 7:00 we took off to check out some of our alyce clover plots in my Polaris EV. 1st one had a few deer in it but the pigs showed up and spooked them out of there. Off we go to the next one. As we're easing up in my EV I can see deer through the trees in the plot. Plenty of them too for the limited part fo the field we can see. I glass through the trees and count 14 rack bucks in the portion of this 1 1/2 ac. plot I can see from over 50 yards back inside the woods. A couple look to be mature bucks but hard to count tines and size them up through the brush. We eased a little close to try to get a better view when one picks out our movement going to full alert. We freeze and after 30 seconds or so they all ease out the far side. Fortunately, some of the deer were close to a trail cam I set earlier that afternoon. Can't wait to check that camera this weekend. BTW...got 2 bucks on trail cams for the hit list last week. One is a wide 8 point, at least at this point. The other is a main frame 8 with either kickers off both G2's or he's starting to show split G2's. Still got one of my Reconyx cams running there. Too early to tell how bucks will fill out their antler growth down here with these SW MS bucks getting a later start on antler growth than most of you are used to. Can't upload pics in RT's photo post right now for some reason since the forum upgrade. Great afternoon I got to share with my son.

redkneck
Sounds like you've got a great place over there Al. My wife's uncle hunts in Port Gibson and has invited me to go with him but never have followed up on it. I may try to make a river hunt this year, I have some friends that go to Panther Swamp each year, and another friend that has a camp at Hillside. Rhino
Sounds like you've got a great place over there Al. My wife's uncle hunts in Port Gibson and has invited me to go with him but never have followed up on it. I may try to make a river hunt this year, I have some friends that go to Panther Swamp each year, and another friend that has a camp at Hillside. The deer are just hammering our summer plots planted in alyce clover right now. 2 years ago the deer were hammering our alyce clover plots just like they are this year. Around mid September the mature bucks went nocturnal feeding in them. Go figure. I was keeping tabs on a 5 year old 10 point that year. The last daylight pic I had of him & his wide 8 point running buddy was Sept. 19th. One of my best friends killed the 10 point on Jan. 2nd. As far as I know, the wide 8 was never seen during hunting season. We'll see if that's the case again this year. Alyce clover is some great stuff for summer plots in this part of the country. Last year we didn't plant summer plots because we had a bigger project with the manual labor part of building a new camphouse. If we had planted them, they would have burnt up anyway since we went 58 days without any rain at all. It's been over 20 years since I hunted Panther Swamp & Hillside. If memory serves, that's 2 areas where the clouds of skeeters can block out sunshine.
