NEBRbruiser
I've only been into bow hunting a year and I bought a used Hoyt Vectrix for my first bow. How do I know when the strings need to be replaced? I know there is SOME fraying of the string but I'm on a budget and wondered if there was something in particular I should be looking for to know when to replace the strings. Any info would help. Thank you
suro25
I think this subject is a matter of personal opinion. I try to change mine a couple years. I guess it would all depend if you do a ton of shooting and how you maintain your archery equipment. I would recommend see what the manufacture of the bow and string and see what they recommend. Straight Shooter
Fraying on the string is normal wear and tear, nothing a little string wax can't cure. It is the broken strand of the string or harness that you would need to be concerned with and want to have the string and harness replaced. I had a bow for 9 years and when I sold it, that bow still had the original string and harness on it. I kept it waxed and soley used it to hunt with, I personally believe if you take care of them they will last a long time. First and foremost, change the string or harness if any strands are broken. bluelund79
I personally change out every year, but I shoot daily. Quality made strings and cables will last 2-3 years (approximately) if taken care of properly by cleaning and waxing. If I had purchased a used bow, I'd would personally change out the strings and cables, unless I knew that the previous owner cared for the them properly. Guest bowhunter56
If you have any doubt about it, replace it as soon as you can, it would not be fun to have it let go in hunting season, then you may have to wait to have it fixed. ChrisSeb53
it would depend on if i knew the previous owner and how they took care of the bow... if i bought a used one i would more than likely go to my local shop and have them put on a new string for me
BamaTrae
A Winner's Choice string has been on my bow since 2005, still looks and works great. I wax every week, and keep a close eye on it. I have seen some "custom" strings that don't have as many strands that don't hold up as good. If in doubt change it out.
fly
I used to wait 5 years before changing since I only shoot during the hunting months. Then a guy at the pro-shop I shoot at had a string break that was 6 years old. Hurt his arm pretty bad - trip to the ER and out for the season. Now I change my string every 3 years. I'd never go 5 again. How old is the bow? It could likely have the original string. Change it for 100 bucks, it's not worth the risk. BuckNrut
Change it for 100 bucks, it's not worth the risk. $100 to change a string! That's why I'm going back to my Bear. It has double tear drops, and I can change the string without a press. I keep a "junk" string on when I'm not shooting, and alternate two "shooting" strings so they wear evenly. I replace the hunting strings every two years.

X3 Changed mine a couple of weeks ago...it was 2 years old but had a broken strand or 2. The new string has a 2 year warranty. Not sure how they can do that. If you shoot a lot, you're string won't last as long.
