smo
I have about a 1/2 acre I want to plant for fall/winter. I was wondering what would be a good draw. It will get plenty of sunlight. Also after spreading seed, do I need to disk again. Don't have the money to fertilize either.
dogdoc
1/2 acre---go to feed/seed store and buy 50# of wheat for about 10 bucks then buy 50# of triple 19 fertilizer for about $20 bucks. disc the plot and broadcast fertilizer then disc again. then broadcast seed and LIGHTLY disc to cover seed. You'll have a plot for 30 bucks that will start drawing quickly and stay green all winter. best low cost plot you can plant on 1/2 acres. todd
smo
Thanks, Todd. I was looking @ spending about $100. Is there any other seed you would recommend also?
dogdoc
One thing you don't want to do is put down too much seed. The competition from the plants will prevent optimum growth. If you have a few extra bucks to spend you could go to wally world and buy a small bag of shot plot for 10 bucks and use 1/2 of the bag in the half acre with the wheat. It is a mixture of 4 different brassicas. They are very small seeds so you don't want to lightly disc the brassicas. After you cover the wheat seed broadcast about a pound of the brassica mix and then either drag the plot or just drive over the plot with your tractor and compact the brassica seeds into the soil with the tires on the tractore. Spend another 20 bucks and buy another bad of triple 19 fertilizer so there is 100 pounds on the plot. You'll stil be under 100 bucks!!!! The fertilizer will increase the growth of the wheat and brassicas and also make it even more attractive for the deer. good luck tod
hunter109
when we put out any kind of seed we use a fertilizer that we used on tobbacco it seems to get them up and growing quickly well after the plants come up just throw a little more on and then it will be as big as you want it we used i think triple 10 or triple 15 and it gets them up fast use ask for a tobacco fretilizer they will know what it is
