redkneck
My 2y/o lab is chewing the end of her tail. It's been non-stop for several days. She's outside most of the time, so I'm not going to say we keep her 100% free of fleas, but she's never done this before. She just keeps chewing the end of it and it's raw and nasty. Maybe someone here has had this before, or maybe Todd will be on later. I did get a lab pup once that had all the hair on it's tail gone, but was a flea issue that I was able to cure. dogdoc
could be fleas. take a good look and see if there are any running around. Could have also injured the tail and now won't leave it alone. Allergies will also cause that occasionally but not typically on the end of the tail. A spider bite/wasp sting could also cause that. Go to a pet store and buy an elizabethian collar to put on the dog to keep him from chewing it any worse. apply an antibiotic ointment to it several times a day and keep the collar on and it should get better. if not then need to head to a vet. todd
redkneck
Todd you are da Man! I don't mind taking the dog to the vet but I work 40 miles north of here, and my vet is 15 miles east and the logistics is a pain in the butt, although the vet is pretty hot
Norm Sauceman
HOT SPOTS!!!! Go to your local pet shop or maybe Wal-Mart and get a yellow liquid called Sulfadine. I used to use it when I had dogs and it worked the best
jcot2773
Ok, my 3 year old lab did that when he was about 8 months old. he had fleas all over from his hips back, don't know why but thats the only real place that they bothered him. he eventually chewed all the hair from his hips back off. a capstar and some frontline as well, as some benadryl (sp?) ointment to relieve the itching should fix things up. Well, any topical ointment that works on kids for itching and heat spots will work on a dog. be sure it is a childs formula or dose. If not then it will likely make him sick. benadryl pills will work also to help relax him. thats what i did with my lab, and after about 2 weeks his skin turned back to normal color and within 2 months he had all his hair back.
