redkneck
Been trying to catch the ringtail in my garbage for a while now. Went outside before sunup this morning and caught a glimpse of a black figure in the trash bin. Slipped back in to grab the trusty Glenfield model 10. I put a good stalk on him, wind to my face (ok so there was no wind, but sounds more dramatic) and I put a big red oak between me and him. I got about 25 yards away and went to sidestep and shoot, but the scope was fogged like crap coming from my air conditioned lair into the humid air outside. I wiped it off best I could and eased up to catch him looking at me. I squeezed the trigger and got a "SNAP". God only knows how old some of my 22 ammo is, so I chambered another round (always have a backup with big game). Put the gun back up..... more fog.... wipe.... coon's getting away now, so I put his chest in the center of the scope and fired. He went about 15 yards in the woods and I turned the dogs lose on him. The lab got bit immediately and cried all the way back to my feet, but the dachsund held his ground and just stared at the coon until he died.... and THEN he runs up and bites it repeatedly. Once the coon is confirmed dead the lab goes and reclaims her prize while growling to keep the weiner dog away. Now that was a time waster to read..... Rhino
Congrats on the trophy hunt! Ya know sometimes you have to measure the trophy by the hunt. BTW...next time hit the lenses of the scope with a hair dryer 1st to warm them up. That will cure the fogging up problem next time you take it out of the sweet air into the humidity we deal with here.
redkneck
Best hunting story of the year right there!!! By the way. Gonna mount him right? Dropped the body off on the way to work. Staged the scene to look like road kill since he's out of season...... Sounds like you have some good hunting dogs. The finest stock around. Wanna put a deposit for a pup? You killed him with a gun?! Where was the bow? I was afraid our attorney general would frown on hunting before 10-1. Our elected officials would have had to make another special hunt just for me. Congrats on the trophy hunt! There wasn't time and besides I was pretty shook up, I've been after this one for a while, I just couldnt think straight. :1eye::camera::taped::offtopic::pop::eat:

redkneck
I think I have five 22's. Auto, lever, single barrel, and bolt. There's just something about that old model 10 bolt action with the pull plunger on it. I've shot a gazillion critters with it over the years, you can really shoot thier eyes out with it. I've had 2 game wardens tell me if they are a nuisance, causing property damage you are allowed to trap them and "reduce" them. They both told me it's illegal to trap and relocate. It's also clearly defined in the Ohio Admin Code. http://codes.ohio.gov/oac/1501%3A31-15-

Tominator
You might want to check your Mississippi revised code. (Assuming Mississippi has one. ) Might be totally legal to euthanize a pest like it is here.
