PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I do have a bunch of best shots but recall a number of years ago hunting groundhogs with a friend. We were taking turns shooting and we decided to move to a spot we had not hunted that day and on the way there a groundhog ran across the corner of the field we were in and my friend said it is your shot. I raised my sako 222 rem and at a little over 100 yds and a running target took a shot. I could not believe it but that pasture grizzly folded like a cheap deck of cards and rolled to a stop. We walked to it and he said look at that you shot him in the ear and I immediately began looking at my gun. He said what is wrong and I replied that something was definately wrong as I was aiming for its eye. To which he replied that there was some brown and smelly stuff coming out of my barrel. Hitting it 2nd,4th and 5th shots. Now that's a poke!!!
Flintlock1776
The vast majority have been when the deer went down and traveled ZERO yards. Missouri, Alabama, Gerogia and PA all have there special memories to me. Same with NJ bow. I've been fortunate, longest run after the hit was 20 yards but all but him dropped when I hit them. Each shot is a fond memory. They non-deer shot that always sticks out in my memory was having the switch my 30.06 from my right shoulder to me left (I am right handed!) pull up the scope and shoot a running coyote going right to left 150 yards out. He tumbled on the shot and laid not too far from where I pulled the trigger on him.
Strut10
Longest shots on critters were groundhogs. 530 yds. with a .300 Win and 510 yds. with a .220 Swift. Most impressive/lucky was a +/- 360 yd. standing, offhand kill on a red fox with my Model 70 .300 Win Mag. Took it right behind the shoulder, which was, remarkably, where I was aiming. Gotta plug my old man for a second. Watched him shoot a buck through the front shoulder with his Ruger 77 .300 Win Mag and a prone rest over a piece of oak firewood (after he had just made a 400 yard dash to the woodline in shin deep snow as fast as he could go). I called his first shot a whisker low with binos. 2nd shot made the water fly off the deer. Measured with dial calipers off a topo map at 655 yds!!!!!!! hunterbobb
I shot a prarie dog at a measured 513 yards. Used a 22-250 Remington 700 Varmit rifle with a 4 X 12 Lueopld scope. Shot a rabbit once with a 22 on the run. I took off right at my feet and was angleing away as fast as it could. I brought the gun up pointed fired once and it dropped over dead. I had hit it in the head. The shot was pure luck. I'd never be able to do it again as long as I live.
JJL
We shoot alot of whistle pigs at over 1000 yards. The whole long range thing is just a matter of calculations and equipment..............blah blah blah. My favorite shot ............... a Rufus Hummingbird at 32 yards, off a branch, with open sights and a .22 pos pelet gun.
Hoosierbuck
My best shot with a rifle...well, I don't shot at long range like some of you guys. The areas I hunt really not conducive to it. The longest rifle range I have been to is only 225 yards. I have shot some nice groups there with my .338 Win. Mag. I shot a yearling deer in the neck at 75 or 80 yards on a dead run (broadside) with a muzzleloader. I shot a 170" buck at 12 yards, left handed, after he came in on the "wrong side" and I flipped the gun to the other shoulder. Again with the muzzleloader. I head-shot a 13 striped ground squirrel at 35 yards out a second story window with a scoped 77/22 and CB longs. I shot another one of those little buggers at 35 yards with an iron-sight mini-30. That's really about all I got. I have enjoyed reading your stories. HB
PA_Spike_King
Sorry I forgot about this thread.... I was ground-hog hunting with my Dad years ago at the farm I was working at, at the time and we seen one that I will never forget. It was way out there and Pop said you need to try so I aimed a little over it and shot, it never moved so we stepped it off and it was close to 335 yards. I was in total awe. I shot a doe with a flint lock muzzy off hand at 120 yards and it went strait down. I also killed a crow at 154 yards with one shot from a 22lr, to this day I still can't believe it worked. LOL And just a couple of years ago I killed a doe at close to 325 to 350 yards with my 7mm mag. There are more but just can't remember right now. lol
