Mach1
Today while at Cabela's in Hazelwood, MO (it was packed due to Mark & Terry Drury and Michael Waddell being there), my dad, brother, and I were discussing buying a muzzleloader in MO and if the 24 hour waiting period would be required for us to take it home since we are all Illinois residents. We know it's this way for shotguns/rifles, but couldn't remember if it was the same for muzzleloaders. Can someone refresh my memory? Thanks. jesse8953
Don't know about the laws in missiuri but my brother just bought a 870 in Indiana and he lives in Ohio.Walked in walmart walked out with a gun about 45 min. later.ML you don't need any paperwork to fill out to buy one.no federal check.Something don't sound right about a 24 hour wait on buying out of state ml. Mach1
As I understand it, in IL a 4473 must be filled out to buy a muzzleloader. Also as I understand, any firearm (as defined by our FOID Act) that can fire a projectile 700 fps or more requires a 4473 and a background check. How I understand it, a muzzleloader is considered a firearm and the 24 hour waiting period applies. It's been a few years since I worked at a store selling guns and have forgotten how everything is applied, so I'm going off memory here. I hope somebody can clear this up for me as it's been awhile since I've bought/sold a gun.
Washi
I don't think the 24 hour waiting period even exists anymore. I'm not sure about Illinois' laws though.
Hoosierbuck
A 4473 is a Federal form, and as such it seems odd that IL law would dictate when one would or would not be necessary. Muzzleloaders (not Encores, though as the frame is adaptable for use as a true firearm) are NOT considered firearms by the BATFE. As such you can mail order them. Also, I would presume, you can buy them outside of your own state of residence. The IN/MI/OH thing is an agreement under state law to allow our residents to purchase firearms in neighboring states. IL is almost as bad as California for infringing gun rights. HB
WIwhitetailhunter
In WI, you can buy a ML right off the shelf. No paperwork. With a rifle and shotgun, they just do a computer check and out the door you go a short time later with your new gun!
MUDRUNNER
I bought my muzzleloader from Bass Pro in St. Charles about 5 years ago. I walked right out with it without any paperwork or questions asked. I also buy ammo there every year and never been asked for my FOID card, even though i'm sure their records show I live in Illinois.
Mach1
Just talked to someone on another forum I'm part of, and they bought a muzzleloader at Cabela's in Hazelwood yesterday and were able to take it with them. So I guess my question is answered. Mudrunner, I've bought ammo in Indiana and haven't even been asked for my FOID either and they knew I was from IL when they asked for my drivers license when paying with a credit card.
