Jeramie
I was in the market for a Recurve. I ended up buying two. One is a Tri-State Archery Wildcat (41lbs). The other is a Black-Hawk Scorpion (45lbs). Both bows are marked 60" but the Wildcat string measures at 55". The Scorpion measures out at 57". I need to replace both strings but really cant find good information on them. Ive read buy the strings long and twist them to length but I cant imagine twisting out 5" of string?! Also, how can I be sure the 55" string is correct when the bow reads 60"? How in the world can there be a 5" difference in the string from the marked measurement? coondog
The 60" is the length of the bow standard practice is to subtract 4" from that to give string length you need 56" string. Check these guys out they can help you www.3riversarchery.com all they handle is recurve and longbow
JimPic
The 60" length is the AMO. When you buy strings, just tell them the AMO length for a recurve...the string should be around 4" shorter. Also, they're older bows so you have to use Dacron string(B50 or B500),no fast-flite strings.
Jeramie
So if they are both marked 60 AMO then why is one bow shorter than the other and the string a couple inches shorter? Unstrung the Tri-State is a couple inches shorter.
Doc
So if they are both marked 60 AMO then why is one bow shorter than the other and the string a couple inches shorter? Unstrung the Tri-State is a couple inches shorter. If they are both marked with the same length when indeed they are not, then one or both are incorrectly marked. Jeramie
There is where im running into confusion.... Should I just try to match the string lengths that came with them?
JimPic
The best way to measure the AMO is to lay the bow on its side. Take a length of string and starting at the nock groove, follow along the limb, straight thru the middle of the riser,to the opposite nock groove. Because differant bows have differant riser and limb configurations, one may seem shorter than the other. Also,I'm betting the strings are endless loop strings. Alot of people make the endless strings to fit where they want the brace height at because they don't stretch like a dacron Flemish twist string will. So if the previous owner liked it at a higher brace,he made a shorter string(or lower brace-longer string)
Jeramie
That would actually make more sense. The one (shorter) has a lot more curve to the limbs as it is a true recurve. The longer is a semi-recurve so it is a longer bow! Now I have a base line... Thanks guys.
