Turkeygirl
I'll be using my Mossberg 500 20ga and was wondering which choke I should use for the #2 shot I'll be using. I have a full, modified, impr. cylinder, and I think and x-tra full. My hunting situations will be in fields. I'll hopefully be able to work them in nice and CLOSE. I can't remember what I used last year...only went out twice. This year planning to go out ALOT! Was the first person yesterday to by the duck stamp at my local post office:jaw:
Strut10
So long as your tubes are steel-safe, I'd guess modified. I used to shoot I.C. with BB and BBB for deked geese in cornfields. The finer shot should go well with a whisker tighter choke. Best bet is to go to the patterning board just like you would for turkey loads. 92xj
extra full with BB if you can. If they are decoying wait as long as possible when they are back pedaling and take head shots. If they are fly - bys this option will give you the range you need, still aim for the head. I have seen geese take full body shots of BB and #2 shot for a 3.5 12ga shell and not come down. Lead a little further out than normal and follow your shot into their eyes.
colorado bob
Back when I use to hunt waterfowl--- rough rule of thumb was that a mod choke with steel was like a full choke with lead. Steel shot was 1 size better that than lead. So your #2 steel is like a #4 lead. I would use a mod choke with #2 steel. Fact is that is what I did use. Jeramie
Another vote for modified. Pretty much all I use for any waterfowl is #2 with modified.
2labs
Modified is the best all around choke for waterfowl!!
dogdoc
I use my IC for all my duck hunting over decoys. When field hunting geese i go with the modified unless they are decoying really good then i'll put the IC back in.
92xj
You guys need to practice more. the key to killing loads of geese is tight patterns to the head.
dogdoc
You guys need to practice more. the key to killing loads of geese is tight patterns to the head. very true! i always try to focus on the beak. however my benelli chokes specifically say on the improved modified and full to not use on steel shot. 92xj
very true! i always try to focus on the beak. however my benelli chokes specifically say on the improved modified and full to not use on steel shot. True about the benelli chokes. I have actually shot steel 3.5 #2s through the IM and F with no problems in my SBEII. I have since purchased the Strait Heat choke tube from Foiles. Its dirty! I will not be purchasing any other chokes for a long time now for geese and duck. Go shoot Trap first with your tight chokes and get good on the small targets at far distances (trap) Once you are hitting 4 out of 5 at trap hitting decoying geese in the head will be cake! SourthenILdeerhunter
shot steel 3.5 #2s through the IM and F with no problems in my SBEII. Thats what my grandpa would use for duck and geese
hutchies
I'm another fan of tight patterns...............full or extra full with #2's or BB's. We hunted geese last year and I switched over to 3.5" BB because some of the geese with 3" #2's would keep on flying. Right now I'm still shooting my Mossberg 835 with the turkey barrel and a Carlson's full choke. I will be shooting 4"s for ducks because most of our shots are long and BB for Geese. JohnVaca
Haver you tried a Pattern Master? These chokes seem to be the "ticket" for me. I think you would find them to help you as well. Hope this doesn't come across as SPAM.

layin on the smackdown
Benny has it dead to nuts...I'm not sure when or what type of season's you have, but the only time i ever even consider using anything smaller than a BBB is right now during the "special Season" or "Nuisance Season" and even now, i wouldn't go any smaller than my first shot being a #1 followed by two BBB's...Full or Extra Full choke...I generally would shoot a full until later in the season when birds get decoy and call shy, then switch to an extra full - however, about 8 years ago i went to the pattern master choke tube and will not shoot geese with anything else. Mind you, this is for geese only...I would not recommend shooting ducks with this set up...Ducks are a whole nother ball game in which your specific set up and species being hunted should determine what loads and chokes you need. I might use this on late season mallards, but thats about it, and even so, its still a little bit of an overkill. Good luck!
