I only got 4 more to go (does). Me and Rhine are on another team on some state forums, and get ten points for does (20 does for a 4 man team, lol). Got lots of them around here that need to be thinned. Pulled the card yesterday from the lease for the first time in a while. I got all excited when looking at the small viewfinder, but when I got home realized it was a thin and wide 7pt

Went out again last night. I had a 4 pointer come in and eat acorns about 35 yards from me. He was the only deer I saw. We have a couple of special hunts coming this weekend and next. A Youth hunt and then a Doe only hunt. I am going to let the woods cool down a little. The bucks still seem to be tolerating each other. I am waiting until they get hot and heavy.

Good Luck team.

Still a little too warm here too. Had a doe and a spike 8 yards from me yesterday. Had stood up and needed her to move 5 feet for the shot when the hussie looked up at me and blew and ran.

I'M TIRED OF GETTIN BUSTED!

:D

Don't know if I'm gonna hunt this afternoon or watch state play FL. Got it set to record just in case. ;)

Just checking in again. Archery season has come and gone here and all of my hunting was for elk, and with no luck at all. Only had one bull come in and the swirling wind did me in as he got to about the 80 yard mark. The wolves here in the northwest part of the state have the game on the move. It is kind of eerie to be surrounded by howling wolves in the predawn gloom. September was unusually rainy and I got soaked almost every time I went out. I saw very few deer in my travels and I am not sure what that will mean during the general firearm season which opens this Saturday. I have to work this weekend anyway so the rain and snow mix predicted for the weekend will not get me this time. Next weekend, pre-rut, maybe the deer hunting will be good to me on my first three day weekend chasing a buck. I am also off work on Tuesday but can only hunt the first half of the day. Season ends the 28th of November so there is a lot of time left. Congratulations to those who have filled tags.

doubled up on a couple does last night. put some points on the board plenty of time in the season to improve on the score. good luck everyone.

WTG! I'm still fighting hot weather, hopefully get something on the ground this weekend. Dry as heck here, will most likely plant next weekend, which is really late for us.

Congrats...at least somebody is getting deer on the ground. Heading out tonight. Full Moon plus a cold front coming through, hoping for some action.

Well fellas, I haven't missed a deer in five years with a bow until today.

Sat this am from about six o'clock until about nine o'clock and didn't see a thing. My buddy sends me a text wanting to know if he can come over and zero his rifle. I told him to come on over and I would go ahead and climb down. I get down take my stand off the tree, and strap it on my back.

As soon as I look up three does are coming out of the field and into the woods straight to me. I throw my stand off my back and kneel down to get an arrow ready. I also had to pull my quiver off to fumble an arrow out of it. The first doe walks 15 yards in front of me spots me and spooks. She ran out to about 35 yards and stops broadside, so I draw pick my spot and release. TTWWWAAACCCKK!

Unfortunately the thwack wasn't the arrow connecting with the deer, but the kind of sound an arrow makes when it slams into a tree limb. And to top it all off my "friend" never shows or even gives a courtesy call. I'm a bit frustrated to say the least.

Congrats JackedUp.

I had an excellent encounter last night. About 5pm I noticed a big deer come out into the field about 400 yards away. I hit the grunt call twice and he made a bee-line right for me. He got to about 100 yards away and went into the woods and stopped. I hit the grunt once more and he came busting out of the woods down the field edge. He was a small basket racked 8 pointer. He stopped about 20 yards away, made a scrap and went about his way into the woods. He got a pass but it was a great show.

I did also see a doe with a buck entail. He chased her around the CRP field and back into the corn field.

Unfortunatley the next time I can get out is Thursday. Hopefully the big boys will be out and about.

Been really busy lately with work, but did stay the weekend at the camp last weekend, although most of the time was spent planting (finally). I hunted 3 times and only saw small bucks and does out of range. Rain is setting in great over the last two days and grass should be popping up real soon, creating a lot of fresh opportunity with what has been a pretty crappy year so far for me for bow season.

A doe and a hog, I really cant complain so far, but last several hunts I havent even had an old nanny to shoot at, lol.

  • 2 weeks later...

Four days of hitting it hard and not one deer spotted. There has been a fair amount of sign indicating the buck are starting to get ready to rumble but daytime deer movement is nonexistent. Just took a walk around the house and there are several new scrapes and rubs. Trail cam pictures show a few small buck, but all movement is in the middle of the night. Even though I do not hunt around the house it is good to at least see some sign that the rut is about to start happening. The drop in deer movement/sightings this year has been very disappointing. Hopefully the last couple of weeks of the season prove to be a little more fruitful. Good hunting everyone!

Well, he may be the smallest buck I've shot in a while but in this odd year it took a lot more work to get it done. Finally with some tracking snow, I managed to follow him to his bed. I spotted him still bedded but on full alert at about 40 yards. I needed to move to my right to get a clear shot and was one step short of clearing some brush when he got up and took off. I am not a fan of running shots but at that distance and with him now in the open I lined up on his shoulder and touched one off. He turned at the shot and went straight away and disappeared behind some brush. There was no blood for the first 30 to 40 yards from where he turned but then it started with a few spots and increased to a steady stream. As I rounded a cluster of small fir trees I spotted him standing 30 yards away, facing directly away from me. He was on the edge of a long steep downward slope and I was unsure of how hard he was hit so I prepared to plunk him in the butt if he moved. He started to go forward so I let him have it and he dropped on the spot. Fortunately, I did not ruin very much meat as I centered him just right. Did not really need the second shot but I was unsure of that at the time. About a half mile drag back to the truck and arrived back at the house just after dark. This morning while skinning him I managed to do a good one and put a small slice in my arm which was easily closed up with three stitches. Now where are those elk at?

Here's a picture and there is another (almost identical) one in the entry post.

Good luck and good hunting to everyone still at it!
