Hunt or be Hunted
Where is a good place to hunt them? Maybe a hay field?? That's about the only place I would have to hunt them. Never hunted Doves in my life. Wanting to try it!
rhine16
Dove fields around here are usually sunflowers, millet, or wheat. I don't plant dove fields because the fields I get to plant, I plant for deer. So cut corn fields are my first choice. A pond or gravel pit can be hot also. If I hunt this weekend, I'll be setup around my grandad's barn, since all our fields were planted in cotton instead of corn this year. There is a pond on one side, gravel on the other, and a light line that runs to the barn that the doves like to sit on. Wont be much of a hunt I don't imagine, but if we get to pull the trigger a few times, then my lil brother will be happy Edited September 2, 2010 by rhine16

Dakota
Gee, Moderator's Pet, you didn't read my article did you. Grain, gravel and water...look for doves around those places. And if you can find a spot with all three...well then...you're in the chips! Dakota
Ethan Givan
Ive had my best shoots over sunflowers or a good size pond with clean banks. Thats important because doves wont use a pond thats got grass and weeds grown up around it. Cut corn fields work ok, but in my experience they can be pretty inconsistent. Another place Ive seen lots of dove is around a cattle feed lot, where the farmers have been feeding the cattle grain. Just think of several places that fit the criteria of what doves want and go out there and watch.

Tominator
2 keys for us, I'm convinced is a cut grain field, preferably sunflower, and a power line. My buddy has a 15 acre field that he plants in sunflower, then mows it off the the ground 2 or 3 weeks before the season. He has a power line that runs right through it. Doves come in, land on the line then go down to feed.

Ethan Givan
They don't plant Sunflowers around here. lol. I guess they won't grow. Oh yeah they will grow. I grew about 1/2 an acre of them 4 or 5 years ago and they did well. Your climate isnt any different than mine. The main reason people plant sunflowers around here is to dove hunt over. I grew a short variety that got only about 3 foot tall. The turkeys loved them, and I killed a turkey with my bow that fall setting over my sunflower patch
