Dawg
Spot and stalk, I use my 30-30 or bow. Stand hunting, I use my 6.5x55 mauser. Good luck!
redkneck
Just ask them before you go. Good stalk rifle would be the 30-30 or 45-70, a good sized handgun, and a big sharp knife. Some guys don't even carry guns, just the knives. Just depends on the terrain, the number of hunters and dogs as to the safety of making shots with a rifle. I see them do it on TV in open swamps up in the delta, but around here it's pretty thick most places hogs are and a handgun would serve you better. bwana72
If you bowhunt at all, hog hunting with dogs was just made for archery gear. But if you plan to carry a gun, I would agree with the other guys, a .30-.30 or a .45-70 would be good choices. Or even a lever gun in a larger pistol caliber like .44 mag. would work great as well. And, if it is a spot and stalk hunt all of the above would work just fine as well. Most shots at hogs are pretty up close and personal.
