Orion_70
Seeking advice/opinions .. I have a 98 Wrangler Sahara 95k miles, I'm looking at trading to a guy with a 2001 F250 4x4 7.3 L turbo diesel. Going to throw him a little cash too. Question is, who has experience with that particular engine? The truck has 198,000 miles on it with a good bit of towing involved. Anything in particular I should be looking for or checking out? Word I have on that truck/engine is that it should last a good 400k miles with proper maintenance. I need a good work/towing truck to pull my 25' camper with. 92xj
Get it now or give me the guys name and number! All the 6.0 guys are trying to sell their newer trucks to go back to the 7.3. 7.3 has great low end unlike the 6.0, also, no electrical issues like the 6.0. Our old shop truck was a 95 non turbo 7.3 and it had 498k miles on it when the frame broke in half. New truck was 94 7.3 turbo with 200+ miles on it. Towed with every week. Good motor. Shaun_300
Haven't heard much bad things about the 7.3, I've heard some things about the 6.0 though. Sounds like a decent trade despite the miles. But if it's been maintained well you shouldn't have any issues with it. Up here the body and chassis rots off vehicles before the engine goes. Down where you are you wouldn't have to worry about that.
Orion_70
I wound up missing the first one I looked at, actually the guy sold it out from under me. I'll hold my tongue on that guy. I did wind up finding another one though. A 2002 Crewcab 7.3 l turbo diesel with only 101k miles. It's not 4wd but I can't complain with the trade I made with the guy. Shaun_300
That's great man, congrats on your new ride! If you're looking to haul stuff down the highway 4x4 is not a necessity. It'll help your fuel economy not having it if you don't need it. You'd be surprised where I've taken my 2 wheel drive truck. But now with close to 500hp wanting to bite the ground instead of 200hp, it might be different. Haven't gone down those roads yet.
Goinghuntin
I've heard a lot of good things about the 7.3. IMO Ford should have stuck with that engine. I've read too many articles complaining about all their newer diesels. Nathan
Jeramie
Dad has the 7.3 in an old beat to death truck. The 4-doors on that truck dont match! It looks rough but he can hook on to about anything and drag it like it wasnt there. Truck runs like a top too. Great, great diesel engines. jcot2773
just be sure you dont tow with the overdrive on. my buddy had a 97 with the 7.3 and his transmission went out because of it. the guy that owned it before him was pulling a camper and never cut hit overdrive off so it kept switching back and forth and tore up his tranny. broken_arrow
the 7.3 is the better of the ford diesels no doubt ! the 6.0 had elec. problems and the only thing it did do good was blak smoke lol ! the 6.0 is a very weak engine i wouldnt want it in anything noteven my 86 yoter 4x4 ! ive been huntin a 7.3 for a while now but every 1i find either in a 250 4x4 or 350 is just too much for me ! i want 1 real bad but aint breakin the bank for it lol !
