Missilelock
does anyone have any advise for a guy flying on a hunting trip & transporting a rifle? thanks Lane
Adjam5
I have traveled a few times within the USA with guns and have had no issues whatsoever. I like a SKB double gun case. Check for yourself what you need to do so you have smooth travel arrangements. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm Good Luck and safe traveling. Dawg
Don't take it out of the case during the flight.
92xj
TSA approved case. Take pictures of the packing process, each thing you place in the case, take a picture. Take bolts out of rifle. Do not have locked when entering airport. TSA person will come over, have you open it, show them the bolts or open/non loaded weapon. Then they will have you sign a declare paper (i think thats what she called it). Then they will have you close the case, lock it. and hand it to them. They should and will not touch anything but the case at the end when you hand it to them. Its a surprisingly easy process.
toddyboman
never did this so I have some questions too......... what if your gun beats you to your destination.......is your firearm just sitting in the baggage claim waiting on you? Or does it go to a special place within the airport for you to come claim? Once you have claimed your firearm do you have to do anything special to leave the airport with it? Ive never had an issue, but it is in a "special" place. They keep it at the window to pick up and it does not go on the turn table thing. Once you have it in your hands in baggage claim you have nothing else to do but walk outside or walk around the baggage claim if you wanted. You could sit there all day and not have any issues. When I travel across the country from Wa to NC I plan the most direct flight with a minimum of a 2 hour layover. The airport I fly out of is a quarter size of your local walmart with 2 gates so there is really no need for me to get there early but when I fly back from Charlotte I will get there 2.5 hours early to make sure they have plenty of time to get the guns to the plane. I have stopped in Denver for 3 hours and San Fran for 3 hours and they have managed to get my guns safely on board. It is nerve racking, especially when you have two guns in the case that are worth more than my truck, but so far I have not had an issue. Texan_Til_I_Die
THE most important thing is don't fly AirCanada unless you have absolutely no other choice. Also, if you're traveling to a hunting lodge or using an outfitter, you might consider shipping your rifle out there in advance. That way you know if it arrived safely and it will be there waiting on you.
Missilelock
Im hunting with a friend who is stationed on Fort Carson. What shipping method could you suggest to ship it early? that sounds like a good idea.
jcot2773
ship from one ffl to another... your buddy can pick it up for you if you have your ffl set it up for you. i have done that before too. it cost me extra as apposed to shipping some other way but i was notified when it shipped from my ffl and arrived to the ffl close to where i was going, i paid them their fee for receiving the firearm then went on about my business. Adjam5
Firearms need to be declared before boarding, a tag is placed inside and outside the case by airport police, (you keep a matching tag). I had to go to a special office(near baggage handling) where my guns were being held in order to retrieve them. This was my experience in flying to Texas to hunt 4 times in the last 2 years. It is possible, and it does happen for you and your luggage to separate. This is the TSA link for up to the minute rules and regs on what you have to do to travel with a firearm. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm

Texan_Til_I_Die
Better make sure you dot all the i's and cross all the t's. They're notorious for holding up firearms for the least little reason. And sometimes they'll hold them up for unexplained reasons. Plus they charge you an extra $50 just because you have a firearm. Texan_Til_I_Die
Im hunting with a friend who is stationed on Fort Carson. What shipping method could you suggest to ship it early? that sounds like a good idea. You can ship it UPS but you'll have to go to the local UPS office. Can't use any of those pack and ship type places. Since this isn't a sale, you should be able to ship to an individual without involving any FFL's, or you may be able to ship it to yourself at the address of the UPS office at your destination city and do a "hold for pickup." Call your local UPS office and I'm sure you'll get more details. BTW - I'm basing this off of my experiences with guiding some out of state hunters in the past. We had a party fly in from Florida and they shipped their rifles ahead of time to the ranch foreman. That was about 10 - 12 years ago, so it's possible the rules may have changed since then (think post 9/11).
jcot2773
yeah, the way it was explained to me was that the only way to garuntee that it doesnt hit any snags in the process is from one ffl to another.
