bowhuntMN
I've been looking for a 98 Silverado half ton for a while. But my uncle, who is a GM mechanic, said that the motors in the 98 models tend to have problems after 200,000 miles. My cousin (his son) has a 98 that broke the 200k mark a while ago and hasn't had a problem yet. I've also heard people say that those trucks are invincible and will run forever, even pushing 250k. But on the other hand, I asked you guys about a '98 that was for sale last spring and some of you said that the LS motors in the newer trucks were better on gas, as well as other things, than the motors in the 98's. Has anyone else heard of '98's having problems after 200k?
MUDRUNNER
I would think that after 200,000 miles any vehicle could tend to have some issues. I have a '98 Chevy 4X4 and just rolled over 151,000. The motor runs pretty good, but I did have to put a fuel pump in it last weekend. I believe there were some issues with the intake gaskets also, but that's not too big of a deal to fix.
wtnhunt
Probably depends on what motor it has. My 98 has a 350. Truck does all I ask of it and the motor has more than enough power at nearly 160,000 miles to pull anything I need it to. My 1992 also had a 350 and it never had any issues or even burned a drop of oil until after it got over the 200,000 mile mark.
bowhuntMN
Are there different motors between the Z71 and 4x4 models?
Shaun_300
I could have swore I replied to this one, must have forgot to click the post button. There's not too many problems with the engines themselves other than the intakes leaking like mudrunner said. They're not all that big of a job to do or costly repair either. I'd be more worried about the transmission at that mileage than the engine. Especially in the 1500s, the 2500s that have the 4L80E transmission hold up a lot better than the 4L60E in the 1500s. As for the engines there's either a 5.0L (305) or 5.7L (350). Don't think it matters on Z71 or 4x4. Z71 is suspension upgrades.
Goinghuntin
I'm with these guys here. I've never really heard about the 350 having any major problems, and after 200k miles any vehicle is going to need something sooner or later. redkneck
and after 200k miles any vehicle is going to need something sooner or later. Nathan Heck yeah, you got lots of miles, you should expect some minor issues. I got 250+ on my 2000 model and it still runs great, but it sure has issues. Keep the maintenance up, mainly the oil/tranny/diff fluids filled and changed right and you'll have a lot more miles to go on the drivetrain. The other stuff, alternators, U-joints, etc... just come with the age and you should expect the occasional afternoon under the truck at that age. Ravin R10 man
I had the intake leak, but I only got mine up to 180k...the tranny was hesitating in reverse on cold days..0 degrees or colder, so i park so i can pull out going forward, then it will shift into reverse after only 50 feet with no problems.. bowhuntMN
Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't any reputation for these motors crappin the bed right around 200k. I'm always up to date on oil changes and am known to keep good care of my vehicles so usual maintenance isn't a problem. Thanks again for your help. Onlychevy6
I own a 98 K2500 extended cab short bed with a 454. It has 220,000 miles on it and i just replaced the Intake manifold gasket. It still gets 12.7 mpg @ 70 mph all day long.
