Motor in '98 Silverados- Problems after 200,000?

Recommended Posts

I've been looking for a 98 Silverado half ton for a while. But my uncle, who is a GM mechanic, said that the motors in the 98 models tend to have problems after 200,000 miles. My cousin (his son) has a 98 that broke the 200k mark a while ago and hasn't had a problem yet. I've also heard people say that those trucks are invincible and will run forever, even pushing 250k. But on the other hand, I asked you guys about a '98 that was for sale last spring and some of you said that the LS motors in the newer trucks were better on gas, as well as other things, than the motors in the 98's.

Has anyone else heard of '98's having problems after 200k?

Probably depends on what motor it has. My 98 has a 350. Truck does all I ask of it and the motor has more than enough power at nearly 160,000 miles to pull anything I need it to. My 1992 also had a 350 and it never had any issues or even burned a drop of oil until after it got over the 200,000 mile mark.

I could have swore I replied to this one, must have forgot to click the post button. :o There's not too many problems with the engines themselves other than the intakes leaking like mudrunner said. They're not all that big of a job to do or costly repair either. I'd be more worried about the transmission at that mileage than the engine. Especially in the 1500s, the 2500s that have the 4L80E transmission hold up a lot better than the 4L60E in the 1500s.

As for the engines there's either a 5.0L (305) or 5.7L (350). Don't think it matters on Z71 or 4x4. Z71 is suspension upgrades.

and after 200k miles any vehicle is going to need something sooner or later.

Heck yeah, you got lots of miles, you should expect some minor issues. I got 250+ on my 2000 model and it still runs great, but it sure has issues.

Keep the maintenance up, mainly the oil/tranny/diff fluids filled and changed right and you'll have a lot more miles to go on the drivetrain. The other stuff, alternators, U-joints, etc... just come with the age and you should expect the occasional afternoon under the truck at that age.
