RangerClay
Yep my 25+ year old freezer finally bit the dust. Better now than in two weeks when I start to refill it with venison. Fortunately I didn't lose much and I'm taking about 6 roasts to a processor to be made into Italian sausage. Now I go shopping. Have any of you had any bad luck with a certain brand of freezer? I want to make a smart decision when I go tomorrow. Thanks Joe

wtnhunt
We have two kenmore's, an upright 12 cu ft and a large chest freezer. The upright is about 14 years old, no idea how old the chest freezer is, but it is a good bit older than the upright. The only issue I have had was the door gasket on the big chest freezer, last summer we were letting our contractor put his ice in there and I noticed it was running constantly. Not sure what happened with it, may have just been the gasket was worn out from being old, but it would not seal. Was pretty pricey for the replacement gasket, but after replacing it the problem with it running constant seemed to be resolved. No long term experience with any other brands of freezers, we will buy kenmore again if we ever need to.

Adjam5
Glad you were able to salvage the meat Joe. We have 2 Kenmore freezers. One upright and one medium sized chest. The chest gets all the venison, skulls and frozen critters for trapping bait. Have no issues with them at all and they are going on 10+ years. I am pretty sure Kenmore is made by Whirlpool. TBow
I vote Kenmore too. Can't beat Sears warranties and service IMHO. I just bought a 7.1 cu.ft. chest freezer and got rid of my old Westinghouse unit (that still worked, but was taking up too much space). The old Westinghouse weighed a ton compared to the newer units, plus the newer freezers are more energy efficient. TBow
Dawg
Freezers are the same as washer and dryers, many brand names made by just a few manufacturers. Whirlpool, Maytag, Frigidaire, Kenmore would be my picks, there's not going to be a lot of variance in specs just the brand name.
stcif
I used to sell appliances a while ago for Sears. In the past Whirlpool made most Kenmore products (washers, dryers, refers, freezers). That has changed. The way to know who makes a certain Kenmore product is to look at the first three numbers of the model #, which is then followed by a decimal and the remainder of the model #. It was and still is hard to beat Sears for customer service. I've seen them take an appliance back from a customer that was owned for years. My last freezer I bought at Home Depot though. A Maytag, and not frost free. So far so good with it. I bought it about 8 years ago. Kenmore refers/freezers are now made by Whirlpool, Amana, GE, Frigidaire to name a few. One thing I noticed a while back if I remember correctly was no matter what the brand, they all used the same compressors made by Embraco in Mexico. Flintlock1776
I have an old Sears going good after 30 years. I have 2 other sears deal not made exactly the same like the old boys but still works great. Don't skimp get the best and maybe a little over what you originally budgeted as a good one will last decades like mine. God luck!
woolybear
Glad you could salvage the contents Joe. Never had a freezer crap out on me unless the power went out. Have a Whirlpool chest freezer that "keeps on ticking" even after a 4 foot basement flood. That's the extent of my experience with them, and I'm happy for it! Jeramie
Sounds like you got your money out of it.... At least you didnt lose a bunch of food. That adds insult to injury.
stevebeilgard
i'll disagree with the sears freezers. sears was once very good, but the last few years has gone waaaaaay down hill. ever since they bought k marts a few years ago. anyway, their warranty now completely sucks and the sears name is not what it used to be. most sears appliances are made by fridigedair. if you have time, joe, wait and check around at home depot, lowes, etc for a scratch & dent sale. you can save hundreds if you don't care about a few scratches. but stay away from sears so i don't have to give you the ole "i told you so" lol
Turkeygirl
We have a Gibson commercial box freezer for several years now. Clean it out about once a year to get all the frost build up. She keeps on chugging on. Your freezer sure did die at a good time, I've heard the stories of freezers dying when people are gone and coming home to a mess....I can't imagien the waste of food.
