wtnhunt
I think a majority of those do in fact work out of a shop located within their home. I know I do.My shop is an addition built onto my house specifically for the taxidermy business. It has it's own heat source, running water and has it's own electric panel. I incur utility costs directly related to the shop along with a portion of my annual land taxes and a percentage of my home insurance policy is a result of the business. I do know some of those guys who replied in that thread have shops as big as my house located next to their homes. Maintenance cost is another expense most of us inquire annually. I know I do every year and will have to replace the roof over the shop this coming spring or summer. So taxidermist working out of their homes is pretty common elsewhere too. Guessing cost of living variances and income ranges all play a part in how much is reasonable and in how much can be charged or how much folks might be willing to pay. Would assume that a taxidermist charging $500 a shoulder mount in an area that has an average household income of less than $35,000 is probably not gonna get a great deal of local business. I know that some jobs around here that pay $25 an hour pay close to $50 an hour in Memphis, but the cost of living in Memphis is probably double or more what it is here. In other words put the taxidermist who is working from his backyard shop with a house payment of $600 a month into a place where he has a $1200 a month payment and it is easy to see where he would have to pass that along to cover his overhead.
