RangerClay
You have family dog that is getting up in years and needs to be put down. I'm curious, how many of you can or have put down your own dog with a .22 or do you let a vet do it?
mikebohio
i almost didn't want to post this but I'm going to. my best friend had an extremely sick dog that needed put down. he couldn't do it himself so he asked me. i didn't want to but i said i would. i used a 22 pistol and point blank between the eyes. the dog did not immediately die. to answer your question i will never do it again. if someone cant afford to have the vet do it i would offer to pay for it myself before i would do it myself. Dakota
There is NO WAY I could do something like that! I hope I never have to be faced with a situation like that. Dakota
redkneck
Had a fiest that was like our child long before we had children. He was 16 and almost blind and deaf and had been ran over twice. Two years before he died a rottweiler tore him up bad and cost me $700 to save, so you know he meant a lot to me. He had gotten out of the back fence and laid down behind my wife's back tire when she left the house one afternoon. She backed over him. I had a choice to make, take him to the vet and spend a fortune to prolong his miserable life (he hated vets) or put a fast end to his life with a 22 to the back of the head. I chose the latter. Strut10
I could and have. It's never easy. Had the vet put our Rott down a couple years back. She lingered/suffered the injection. A well placed round is instantaneous.
JimT
Tough question. Just to put a dog down due to age or illness it would go to the vet. If it was all of a sudden hurt really bad I could shoot it probably.
Ethan Givan
That is tough. If its something I see coming over a period of time then the vet would definitely do it. If something happened unexpectedly like hit by a car or something and the dog was in bad shape, then I would probably shoot it to end its suffering. It would just take to much time to get it to the vet. BTW I can tell you from experience, do NOT shoot a canine between the eyes with a .22. Shoot them behind the ear, or in the back of the head. A little stray "Benji" looking guy who got rolled by a van that never ever tapped the brakes. I did the .22 right behind the ear to end his suffering. When it came time to put my girl down, I hugged and cried and the vet did the deed. Call me MISTER sissy-pants. I can take it. I didn't have as hard of a time when I hit a pygmy goat one night. Put him down, but I felt bad for him that he got dumped out on a county road by some worthless human. HB
womanwhohunts
I have done it myself and had it done by a vet, too. Not only my own dogs but a couple of horses too.I have discussed it with different vets and they agreed a .22 placed right is a humane way to end an animals suffering.I have made the mistake once of shooting a stray dog between the eyes.It was facing me growling and that was the only shot I had. That shot only enters the sinus cavitiy and is not a instant brain death.I prefer a down shot to the top of the head for a dog.A horse is put down by making a cross on its face, eye to ear,eye to ear, where the lines cross is the choice spot.It is never an easy choice to put an animal down.It does affect you.I have never shot anything just because it wasn't wanted. The only ones I have done were suffering and there was no other choice but to end its pain. That does make it easier knowing there is no other choice.I don't recommend anyone just tries it.I grew up on a farm and still run one today. We don't raise our own food to abuse it.I learned at a early age that you never ever inflict un-needed pain on an animal. If an animal is to be put down or butchered it is done as fast and as humanely as possible. I had another thought about an old dog,my own 6 year mutt dog is laying here on my feet.Could I put her down myself when she gets old and can't get around anymore?I'm not so sure.If she got hit by a car or someother accident tomorrow that I knew was really bad,I wouldn't haul her around looking for a vet.I would end her suffering. But if she lives to a real old age and just has no quailty of life left I would probably go for the vet.I will cross that bridge when it gets here, either way with no regrets.I figure God gave me the gift of doing what has to be done without looking back and saying what if.I am a strong person and can deal with lots of thing some folks can't.I live my life to the fullest and never do anything that I might regret.I hope whoever has to make the call to put their pet down knows they are doing what is best for the animal and doesn't let it affect them in a bad way. I might as well tell you the hardest one I ever had to put down.My youngest son was 8 years old at the time.He had been begging for a pup and some friends gave him a 6 week old pom mix.He kept with that lttle thing like you wouldn't beleive.Thought she was the grandest thing he had ever had.About 2 weeks later took her outside to go potty and came running back in the house hollowing theres a strange dog in the yard.I thought sure that big dog had got her.Turned out she chased it out into the road and got hit by a car.Ran over her rear end and smashed it.I will never forget sitting on the side of the road while he cried asking me what to do and please fix her.I just knew he would hate me for what had to be done.I let him sit with her awhile and she just kept screaming in pain.I guess he figured out for himself how bad it was.He finally told me just help her stop hurting.I haven't even thought about that for years, but thinking of it now still hurts.Putting the pup down wasn't what hurt,it was watching my sons pain that got me. fladawg
Not from sickness or illness but i had to put one down...Pick'd up a fine look'n dog off road, look'd like it had curr an sum kind of bulldawg in it,still a puppy, bout a year an half old...I had him on a cable runner, one day one of my daughter's came run'n out of house near him just out of reach.I guess it was cause she had a jacket with a hood on he tried to get her.He was a good dog, with me an the kid's,till that day.Not take'n chance's Xspecily with kid's Nvolved i went out dug a hole put leash on him walk'd him to hole,as he look'd down in hole i put a 270 in back of head, down in hole he went, did'nt flinch...Better him than one of my kid's...wood'nt B able to live with that.... dogdoc
I could and have. It's never easy. Had the vet put our Rott down a couple years back. She lingered/suffered the injection. A well placed round is instantaneous. If the injection is given correctly the dog is completely anesthetized before the last amount of solution is given and should be gone within a minute. Extremely humane. If the bullet is well placed it is humane but unfortunately a lot of times it is not well placed. I had a client that wanted to euthanize his own dog at home. He overdosed his dog on a large amount of sleeping pills. He held the dog until the dog was gone. He wrapped the dog in a blanket and placed it in the kitchen. Checked for a heart beat and no breathing. He said goodbye and kissed the dog. He went to bed--the next morning he awaken by his dog licking his face. Said he screamed as he thought it was a ghost. good luck with your decision and sorry!!! todd
Norm Sauceman
Have done it many times in the past and am sure will again in future. Sometimes you have to man up and take care of things.
woolybear
Have done it both ways Joe. One mutt got bit by a coon and just went crazy overnight. That was an outdoors pooch that got the 22. My st. bernard ran out the door and broke her back in a divet in the backyard paralizing her rear end. She got vet treatment before the needle but got put down in my arms. Guess to me it depends on if you feel you can help/save them, and have the coin to do so 1'st. If that's the case the vet is the way to go and seems so much more peacefull to the old hound to just go to sleep. It's never easy either way. Hope you get it figured out right for you. redkneck
Actually I don't see it as a big deal, just something you gotta do from time to time like Norm said. I mentioned the last pet that meant a lot to me, but growing up in the country there were always strays and things to take care of. When dogs got really down in those days they were just shot, hard to do or not, it's just how it went. Can't recall ever having one suffer unecessarily though from it. Shaun_300
Not sure if I could or not, like others said if it got hit by a car and was suffering I probably could. Or if it bit or threatened any of my family or friends I could. But an old dog that's suffering to old age, don't think I could put my buddy down after spending so many years with him. hoosierhunter
Just answer this question.... Can you stand the thought of accidentally not doing it correctly and watching your dog flop around until they die or your put another round in them? Spend 80 bucks and go to the vet

layin on the smackdown
I had to put my weimereiner down when i was 15 years old....it sucked really really bad...I did it at the vet, but he was hit by a tresspasser with a big blunt object which left him basically brain dead...he could smell and barely get up on his fron two legs, but that was it...He was 7 and died in my arms at the vet clinic. I will most likely never do that again - it takes about 40 seconds, but it seems like 10 years... I like to look at it like this - if im done, and ready to check out, to it fast and let me have my peace in things...My last wish isn't to have a cocktail of chemicals injected into me which takes longer than it should. As far as euthenizing with a .22, it should only be used on small animals period....You are a total idiot if you try to kill a horse or cattle or a large dog by shooting it with a .22, especially shooting it between the eyes. the easiest, and fastest way to kill any 4 legged mammal is to shoot them at the cortex (where the spinal chord meets the cerbral cortex)...my terminology may be off, but behind the head where the spinal chord meets the skull is a garaunteed quick and painless kill. I feel sorry for any of you who have to go through putting a pet or some one elses pet down...all in all it flat out sucks.

Straight Shooter
I've done it both ways and it all depends on the situation. My cat had gotten ran over and I knew he wouldn't live. I had the pistol pointed at him and just couldn't do it, I balled my eyes out and took him to the vet to be put down. Never had a probblem with other cats or dogs but this one I just couldn't do, I had saved him as a kitten from the pound and CJ was my best friend. I understand those that can't do it and those that can.
The Kid
I've had to put a couple dogs down, and a horse to which was one of the most painful things I've had to deal with it was raining and all of the horses were playing and running around and one of our horses shattered her leg, we called the vet and he said he couldn't be out there for a couple hours, i didn't want that horse to have to suffer like that. Norm Sauceman
Just answer this question.... Can you stand the thought of accidentally not doing it correctly and watching your dog flop around until they die or your put another round in them? Spend 80 bucks and go to the vet Not hard to stand or sit right behind the pet and put it right on skull and pull trigger...I have done it countless times and WILL do it again if the pet I love with all my heart is suffering and needs to be put down. NOT waiting 30 minutes or an hour or more driving to the vet. I take it to a familiar place and do it! It is out of respect for the animal and the way I was taught to do it when I was a kid. Does it hurt me deeply? YES IT DOES! But it is part of my responsibility as a pet owner and a friend. If you live close to a vet, fine, but others do not have them next door and sometimes the less suffering, the better in my book. I have done it both ways though. My wife does not see it my way and that is fine too.
