RangerClay
Just answer this question.... Can you stand the thought of accidentally not doing it correctly and watching your dog flop around until they die or your put another round in them? Spend 80 bucks and go to the vet I don't have to put a dog down but I was thinking about my 10 year old goldie and thought this might make for interesting chat. Just so you know, spending $80 is not that easy in NY. If you bring a dog or cat in to be put down you have to pay for cremation. You cannot just take your pet home and bury it. wtnhunt
Sure I could if I absolutely had to, but probably would not. Tough putting down a pet, think in all reality it would depend some on factors like whether or not the pet was outside or inside and how attached I was and how attached the family was to the animal. Having the vet do it for no more than it costs really is the best way though I believe. Far as burying the animal, that is pretty crazy that you have to pay for cremation in NY. redkneck
The last one I put down had nothing to do with money. The vet could have offered to pay me to bring it in and I would have done the same. He was dying and he absolutely hated the vet's office. Even though he was losing his sight, he could smell the place and would start to shake. I was not going to make his last half hour in life consist of waiting in the vet's office for a shot. coondog
Yes i've had to do it .22 behind the ear is the fastest humane way does not make it any easyer.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Yes, but I tend to use something bigger than a .22. It's never a pleasant experience, especially with hunting dogs that are familiar with firearms. A lot of them will flinch if you point a gun at them, so it's obvious they know what's about to happen. I would suggest taking it outside before pulling the trigger.
Newarcher
If the injection is given correctly the dog is completely anesthetized before the last amount of solution is given and should be gone within a minute. Extremely humane. If the bullet is well placed it is humane but unfortunately a lot of times it is not well placed. I had a client that wanted to euthanize his own dog at home. He overdosed his dog on a large amount of sleeping pills. He held the dog until the dog was gone. He wrapped the dog in a blanket and placed it in the kitchen. Checked for a heart beat and no breathing. He said goodbye and kissed the dog. He went to bed--the next morning he awaken by his dog licking his face. Said he screamed as he thought it was a ghost. good luck with your decision and sorry!!! todd I am sorry and it is probably wrong but I laughed my rear off about the sleeping pill ghost dog. :D I could not shoot a dog for any reason. Dogdoc is right, if done correctly the dog is better off being put down by the vet. New

I had a small pet cemetary in my backyard about 5 yrs ago. Couple of them had been dropped off, packaged up, and brought home from the vet in plastic bags? Cremation was an option but not a requirement, but that may have changed unknown to me.
stevebeilgard
i need to let the vet do it. it's tough any way you go.
hunterbobb
I would have the vet do it. The only way I would do it myself was if the dog had been run over and was in a lot of pain. Then I would be sure I used somethiing with a little more power than a .22. A 357 Magnum would probably be my first choice.
Norm Sauceman
22 0r 22 mag is all you would need..Believe me...NEVER had to use anything more than that...not necessary and terrible overkill using anything else...You are only talking about a dog skull, not a buffalo.
