The_Kat
So yesterday evening while at Cash's first football game, we get a call from Jenn's mom. She informs us that Jenn's little and only brother is in ICU in a hospital in St. Louis. She tells us that his liver is possibly failing. They have no idea what caused this as he hasn't drank beer, took an drugs, or even tylenol and was previously healthy. Heck he was just fine yesterday morning and went to the doctor around noon with a severe aching in his back that started mid morning. Since last night the poor guy has went downhill. His liver has indeed failed, and now his kidneys have also shut down. He is in what the Dr's called acute live failure. He is not expected to make it another 24 hours. I jumped jenn on the first flight out, and will be boarding a plane myself this evening if I can find a flight to go be with her and the family. They have a chance to save him if they can do a transplant. And heres where I get lividly pissed off. Because he has no insurance, they will not do the transplant. It only has a 60% chance of saving him, but thats a **** of a lot better than the 90% of death that he has right now without it. Yet because it costs so much and he has no insurance they will not even consider it. I'm beyond speechless..... A human life is worth less than the costs of a freakin surgery? WTF ever...I hope they rot in **** where they belong. I'm praying for a miracle here, but it's looking like we are going to be burying our 21 year old brother next week. A very sad day in our family for sure. Please keep Jenn and her folks in your prayers.....losing any member of the family is tough, but losing a kid is even tougher it seems. I'll try to keep an update as I can! Hang in the Dustin!
92xj
Prayers and thoughts on the way. Not sure of what I could do from here, but if you can think of anything (besides prayers and good thoughts), let me know.
redkneck
Very sorry to hear about your brother-in-law Kyle. Prayers for him and your family. Sad to hear something like that for someone so young. I hope there's a mistake regarding the insurance stuff, that sounds pretty stupid to say the least. wtnhunt
Very sorry to hear this Kyle. Thought hospitals were obligated to care for patients regardless, heck they give free care to illegals knowing they will not ever get paid back. Yeah that ticks me off too bud. Prayers on the way for Dustin and Jenn's and your family.
Shaun_300
So sorry to hear about that Kyle, that's horrible! Hopefully they can figure something out, ticks me off even thinking the hospitals down there are more concerned about money than the human lives their jobs are to save. Prayers sent to your family. The_Kat
Thank you all for your prayers. I missed the last flight out by 2 minutes and there was no way they could get me on it. Therefore I'm stuck here at the house til tomorrow. On a positive note, they got the bleeding from his ears and nose to stop, and started him on dialysis. I'm not quite sure why they'd do that unless there was a gleam of hope he will survive. I think if they considered him fatal, they'd just let nature take its course. I talked to my uncle about the whole situation and he said they legally had to treat him with whatever means they had, regardless of cost or insurance. Thats what I thought as well. I guess we shall see how the night progresses. Jenn sounded alot better and stronger than this afternoon when she got to the hospital. She said he is really swollen up, and also on a ventilator. Thanks again folks! Keep em coming.

Ethan Givan
Sorry to hear this Kyle. Thats really sad. I thought a doctor had to take an oath that they will do no harm to a patient? Seems to me they are obligated to do everything possible to help him, no matter what.
Guest bowhunter56
I also am sorry and sad to read this, it's a shame that "money" drives everything even "life or death" in this country. How a doctor or hospital can choose if a person lives or dies, is beyond me. I could not do it. Money or no money, you/we should take care of one another. I hope some way this situation turns out for the good.
Turkeygirl
Very very sorry to hear this Kat...how shocking, especially in someone healthy. I dealt recently with caring for someone in acute liver and kidney failure...the swelling is due to fluid build up because the kidneys and liverh ave shut down. They probably started the dialysis in order to filter out the toxins the kidneys can't take out themselves. Yes, unless he had a hcp or dnr that basically states no resuscitation, they legally have to treat. My thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Keep the faith. Turkeygirl
And I completely agree....health insurance companies are running the way and how we care for people...it is rediculous. I can't believe the hospital doesn't have some type of repayment plan? I know here where I work we do for those without insurance.
