Ethan Givan
I was shooting my Stevens 200 .308 today (made by Savage) and had already fired about 5 rounds of Winchester ammo through it with absolutely no problem. In fact I was getting 1 inch groups at 100 yards out of it. So then I decide to try some Wolf ammo my brother had. I shot a few rounds of it without any trouble although I noticed my bolt was a little sticky when I opened it to eject the spent case. So I shoot another round and I couldnt get my bolt open. The bolt handle will come up, but not back to eject the spent case. Ive pulled and pulled on it but it wont come out. I have never had any problems out of this gun. Anybobdy ever had a bolt to get stuck like this before? Any advice, other than to never shoot Wolf ammo again?
terry264
Hi Ethan, only saw it done once then did it myself another time but it works. Seems it doesn't take much to stick a bolt when trying to open it normally. Don't tap the bolt handle though. I use a shotgun cleaning rod with no tip on it and the handle screwed off the rod so I have metal to metal. Then make sure your rod will go through a fired case all the way to the primer, try it in another case. Put the rod through the barrel into the case and with bolt handle up and light pull on the bolt handle, tap the rod with anything hard,,,,lightly,,,,things happen fast, lol. I did what you said and it worked like a charm Its a good thing it did because I had already tried everything else I could think of.
terry264
No problem, glad it worked for you too. Saw my gunsmith do it one time and has always worked so far for all.
bluelund79
The laquer from the Wolf ammo caused it stick....I'd not shoot that ammo from your gun anymore. At least you got it fixed easily! Make sure you clean that thing up real good....
scottb
Do not ever shoot any of the russian ammo in your savage, it will not like it and you will have problems everytime. I had the same thing happen on a hunt, and the way i got my bolt free was to lift the handle and STOMP on it to froce it open. I got home and check the brass from that bullet and it had expandend to the point that it split open after the shot. The only thing that will ever shoot russian ammo of mine is my sks, and my ak. I inspected the case after I got it out and it looked fine. I think it was because it was a steel case, instead of brass. Im not shooting anymore of it though. Im gonna stick with brass casings. bowana
Yep...those steel cases will do that. What your rifle is telling you is that your chamber specs are on the tight side. That's WONDERFUL! You don't have a problem.....you have a gem. That's why you were shooting 1" groups. CONGRATS!
