Sick of insomnia

I've taken OTC's before, but it's a toss-up between a good night's sleep with a hung-over feeling the next day vs waking up at 2am and feeling drug out, lol.

Benedryl(dipenhydramine hcl) and benedryl based sleep aids gives me the hungover sick feeling the next morning John, but the dipenhydramine citrate does not. For whatever reason the dipenhydramine citrate is not absorbed the same as the hcl. Several different sleep aids have dipenhydramine citrate.

Three letter word....... O.L.D

My wife was taking some sort of Benedryl when she couldn't sleep. I can't recall exactly which medicine it was though. It seemed to help her a lot and it didn't give her the "don't want to's" the next day.

I'll find out which one she was taking. She's a pharmacy tech so she might be able to tell me what kind of good stuff is out there.

Had alot of that this week also....seems like there is a alarm in my head that goes off at 3am....then I can not get back to sleep...last night was a good night until the $%#@& cat jumped om my head....stupid thing...that was at 4am so I got one more hour lastnight

That's why kitty took a little ride with me at my house :D

My..., how far we've come from having a little nite-cap before bedtime.:drink:

Never been much of a pill popper even when it came to aspirin. Too many side effects including trouble sleeping.

Might have to look into some of these suggestions though. The 2 a.m. wake ups will kick your butt right quick.:toot:

Me thinketh you have a point there Matt. Good call.

The slightest noise anymore that wakes me up and that's it. Been up for over an hour already because of a stupid dog barking. Makes for a really long day. Anybody got any suggestions? (besides killing the dog or calling MJ's doctor)

I really do feel for you. I'm struggling a lot with it, too. Between looking forward to deer season and the new baby keeping me up, I can't sleep a wink anymore. I can't hit the Nyquil anymore because I sleep too hard and don't hear the kid crying. Besides that, it makes me feel really bad the next morning. I drank about 2 or 3 beers every night for awhile, but that's not really a habit I wanted to rely on.

I haven't slept unmedicated in seven years since my accident. Believe me I've been through the wringer on sleep aids, sleep studies and sleep suggestions. I've been going to one of the best sleep specialists in the state. The insomnia is a result of my accident. Not as bad as it was but still a far too frequent visitor.

I take melatonin and lunesta. That works MOST of the time. Sometimes it just isn't going to happen. Doesn't matter how much activity I've had during the day. Some of the worst nights are when I've really wore my self out and should go right to sleep and then I can't.

If you are noise sensitive, have you ever heard of a noise machine? It is a little alarm clock looking thing that emits white noise so that you don't hear barking dogs, etc.

I've used one and it broke and neither of us can sleep without it.

Small fans help too. We sleep with fans on year round. Drowns out the abrupt noises just enough, but does not keep you from hearing the kids.

Leo mentioned melatonin. I tried it and it did seem to help a little, but for me was not really consistent using it after a month or so.

Kinda sounds like you may get a bit anxious John. Hard to fall back asleep when that happens whether you take a sleep aid or not.

I tried melatonin years ago when there was a lot more hype about it. Didn't see any results that I could tell were beneficial.

Give it another try. Several years ago there were many brands of Melatonin that really didn't contain any melatonin. There are also several different strengths to choose from. I take 6mg which is twice as much as it takes for most people (doctor ok'd this for me). There are several smaller doses available that are worthless to me.

Also note your body metabolizes Melatonin very quickly when you are exposed to sunlight. So it's not worth a darn for sleeping in the daytime or if you take it before the sun goes down.

I had to learn all this stuff against my will.

They use melatonin a lot at the nursing home my wife works at. She said some patients seem to really benefit from it. Like Leo said it does have to be taken properly for it to work. Was taking 2 300 mcg before bedtime here and like I said it seemed to help for a little while.

My 6 mg = 6000 mcg

That's 20x the dosage of the 300mcg pills. See what I mean about varying dosage levels being available. Some folks are more sensitive to it than others. So you don't want to overdo it. Work up to the level that helps and don't exceed it.

I've been taking it for seven years trust me the dosage level is crucial.

I see a sleep therapist for my sleep apnea. I have the same trouble sleeping,my breathing machine helps some. I can't wind down at night even though I am tired from working during the day and stay up half the night when I have to work. She told me that alcohol wasn't the way to go to sleep,it made you sleepy at first but after a little time you would wake up and not be able to go back to sleep. She gave me some ambien to help me sleep and it works wonders,I can take one and be out within an hour. It says allow yourself 8 hours to sleep and for a good reason,it works. When I have to work the next day I take a half and it works fine. Good luck with this because I know how you feel brother.
