Big Blacktail down :)

Well 2 nights ago, my buddy Wilf called just after I got home from work and asked me if I wanted to go hunting.

I was so tired and sore from scrapping this dang house I was working on, that I had to decline. But..I said I'd drive down later just to watch, and in case he got something and needed a hand with it.

Diana, I and the dog decided to go down to the farm to watch around 7:30pm, and just before I went out the door I said "Oh geesh, I'd better bring my bow, arm-gaurd and trigger, just in case"

So with that, I grabbed my stuff, threw on a Realtree jacket(just blue-jeans on the bottom), and off we went.

Well, on the way down the driveway towards the barn, I look across the ravine where the little creek runs past the farm, and standing on the hill, headed down to the creek is a nice buck, along with 2 younger friends. :)

So I quickly park the car, get my gear on and try to do a stalk on this buck. I had no idea at this time how big it really was.

I made a circle low so he wouldn't see me, and sneaked up to the bank behind the one barn. The 2 little guys were already half way down the hill, but I couldn't see the big boy. I had to show myself to the other 2 deerin order to see the big one, who was still browsing near the top of the hill.

I ranged him at 35yrds, drew my bow, and thought I'd better wait for a better shot. I waited a few minutes to see what he was going to do, but the 2 little bucks who had already spotted me, decided to go back up and across the top of the hill, headed for the driveway. Guess who followed them...LOL

So off I went to try to intercept them in the gully, right below the driveway, where they were headed. I had to do a big circle so as not to be seen, but when I slowing came across the driveway to look down into the gulling, the deer had apparently gotten a bit ahead of me, and were already heading uphill toward the driveway about 50 yards up. By this time, they had all seen me, so as non-chellantly as I could, I just walked straight up the driveway along the fence, not even looking directly at them, but keeping them in my perifial vision. I made it up almost to where there trail crosses the driveway, stopped and watched as the 2 little guys passed in front of me headed to the neighbour's orchard. I lost sight of the big guy in the tall broom and weeds, but then, there he was just going behind a tree not 15 yrds from me. I pulled back my bow as he stepped out into the clear on the other side, steadied my pin on him, and THWACK. :)

He tried to hobble over to the other fence where his buddies had headed, but I knew from the way he was walking that he wasn't going to be hopping that fence. Sure enough, he made it to the fence, with his buddies already on the other side, but couldn't go any further and just laid down.

I watched him for a bit and decided to just leave him die and walk back down to tell Diana I got him. I turned to walk away, but he got back on his feet and started walking up along the fence. He got in behind a big fur tree that was between us. He didn't come out the other side so I skuck up behind the tree and peaked around. There he was on the ground again, but moaning like crazy. So, I waited until his head was down, and got in closer to him and at a better angle and gave him another arrow into his underside right where his heart would be. Another THWACK, a lot of kicking and thrashing, and he was out for the count in seconds.

I went over and dragged him all the way back down to the truck and really surprised Diana...LOL

One of the nicest Blacktails I've ever gotten, and the biggest on this farm, so far.
