Birthday Doe

Took the day yesterday and spent most of it hunting, but little did I know I'd be in for a long night. I went to the reservoir in the morning only to see a few fawns and a spike buck from a distance.

I came home to see one of the deer in the little herd by my place laying along side the road and had to call the cops to dispatch the poor little guy.

After that excitement I ended up talking to friends and relatives who called with birthday wishes. After a short nap I went back out and headed towards a County parks piece that I got to hunt on this year. At 5:30 a lone doe shows up in the just cut corn and is feeding toward me. I range her at 46 yards where she stopped to pay attention to a half an ear of corn left by the combine. She kept making her way to me and then decided to walk back into the brambles of Hades where she came from.

I drew back my bow and settled the 40 yard pin right on her and let it ride. Needless to say she took off like a cat shot in the backside running hard, tail tucked tight. Unfortunately, she ran right into the thick. I had thought I had heard her crash, but my hearing sucks and I can't depend a whole lot on that. As is my practice, from getting burned before, I waited 1 hour and decided to get down and look for the arrow and sign.

I found the point of impact where she stood as there was a fair amount of blood. I followed it a ways only to end up with a little drop on a piece of grass. It was getting dark and of course the light I had was not enough to find where she may have went into the thorns from Hades! Besides that my arrow was missing!

Well the only thing to do now was to go way back to the truck and get my bigger light and see if I can't pick up the trail. I got a change of a long sleeve jacket and jeans for the trek in the bushes. Headed back I drop my light halfway there. Wouldn't you know the dang thing broke and I was back to the truck and headed to the nearest Walmart to get another big beam light.

Back on track I found a little speck of blood on a raspberry bush headed into the crap. On my hands and knees using my pruners just to get into this stuff had me thinking of Hades night. Picking my way through I came across the fletched 2/3 of my arrow covered in bubbly blood. As if someone turned on the pump there was blood everywhere. Shining my light ahead of me I saw the eyeball of my prize as she lay in a monster sticker bush....:helpsmilie:

After what seemed like an hour cutting her out I drug her out to the field and dressed her. As the shot hit her she was slightly quartered away to where the broadhead reached the far should. Her reaction to the shot broke the FMJ and stayed with her until it made it's way out the exit hole. That was the reason the blood stopped where it did. Every shot is a new adventure, I guess. The main thing was that I knew she was hit hard and just a matter of tackling the situation or should I say the invasive species of rose flora and her friends!!!

Thanks everyone!

Nice shot Mike. What time can I expect the tenderloins on the BBQ tonight?

You will have to wait a few days, Randy. I don't have the facilities here to butcher them up. I do have a little grill though. I had to pack the deer in ice as it was pretty warm here overnight. I needed to get it checked and the nearest place is also a butcher. In all the effort it took to get to that point I forget to cut out the tenderloins. They had better be in the bag when I pick up the meat!:chair:

Nice shot there Mike. Sounds like one of those not so fun track jobs, been there done that a time or two. Glad you found her and got her out. Congratulations again Mike, glad you got one down early on this year bud, maybe now you will have a situation like last year with the nice bucks.

To be honest I had worse track jobs that came up empty, William. I'll need to write a book on some of those one day. The thing with this one was knowing, but not knowing if you can relate to that. I had no idea what to think when the blood specked out. That and the logistics of it and the back and forth to get it done flat wore me out for today.

On a good note I have three different bucks that are on the hit list. I saw two while sitting and the other I jumped in that spot I concentrated on last year. I think it is the same buck. He grew some this year. The other night in the ladder I moved because the cover fell down I had a big 8 point walk right past the original spot. Last Monday after a thunderstorm went through I had a big 8 right under the stand I shot this doe from. I really didn't want to go back there, but the wind was right for the deer coming out of that jungle.

Hopefully, with a little luck I can catch up to one of them. The trouble is the pressure I am starting to see in the deer woods this early. If it's meant to be it will happen I guess. Big moon calls for a midday sit tomorrow, but the temps might influence the game.

That first pic looks like a deer mount in the back of your truck,...LOL but other than that, she looks like a nice mature doe with that long face of hers. I bet she tastes great.

LOL...ya, you think the taxidermist would have left some shoulders on it. I guess he doesn't have any common sense, either!

Yes, she is a good one. Most definitely she will eat good. Most New Jersey deer do. Must be the vegetables or the fancy imported landscaping shrubbery mixed with the oaks. :D
