bman940
I have been an avid deer hunter for a long time and have passed on many an opportunity to take coyotes but those days are over. I recently learned that that the average coyote kills 25 turkeys a year and more then 12 fawns in the Spring. That's a lot of animals I like to hunt so it's time to help them out. My questions are Do you specifically go out to hunt coyotes? Gear calls, rifle, scope, amo, optics, cal. ? What time of year do you have the best luck coyote hunting? If you are not a coyote hunter what woud get you to go out? Thanks,
redkneck
Haven't hunted them in years. Used to set up at night with a game caller and could get one every now and then. Down here it's mostly thick terrain, and small fields mostly. The dogs can and will circle you every time, you can hear them doing it. The wind you almost every time. Maybe got a shot at one about every 5th setup. I'd recommend something like a .223, 25-06, .243, or even 30-30. Just depends on the range you are given shot opportunities at. dbHunterNY
an electronic caller is easier to start out with. a .223 or any deer rifle with some range is good. try not to have anything too shiny. if you'd like to get into it i highly recommend getting the Primos Mastering the Arts - predator hunting DVD with Randy Anderson. You'll be informed as ever and get all kinds of great tips and calling scenarios.
huntnfish
Wow. Did not know a coyote did that much damage. I have not been hunting them but would shot them if I was deer or turkey hunting and ran across one. With them causing that much damage I may start hunting them during the winter months. Thanks for the info.
cain
I've never actually hunted them per say, but have been known to pick one off with my .308 while deer hunting :gun_bandana: I did mess up and passed on a black coyote last year as I thought it was a dog. Someone hunted my stand a few days later and killed it and sure enough it was a coyote.
Flintlock1776
I stay quiet, no call, no decoys but if you cover the food plots they will pass by or through fast. be ready. I drop them with one shot .270 or 30.06 when they are trotting or running

It definately helps with different sounds to make and which sounds means what etc etc... Ill have to warn you though, coyote hunting becomes a addiction after your first dog comes running in on a string!! Way to much fun and a great way to pass those winter months!! Shaun_300
I do some, but I'd like to get out more. I mainly wolf hunt up here, but coyotes are around too. I use either my .220 Swift or .25-06. I normally hunt mid-winter. I use a predator call, rabbit in distress for the most part.

wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Randy Anderson dvd's are a bit of help. Have not had a ton of luck with electronic callers, but then all we have is one of the cheaper ones on the market. Any deer rifle will work, personally prefer my .223 when going specifically hunting for yotes. Depending on where you are and if you just want to thin out the yotes, you can setup on gut piles while deer hunting, does not bother the deer either. Usually switch gears to yote hunting here after deer season ends, but will shoot a yote with pretty well any opportunity I get. We want them thinned out as much as possible to cut down on the damage they do, does not bother me a bit hunting them during up to and after their breeding season. If you want to keep the hide then you can tan it out. Trappers fletch out their hides and sell the raw fur to a buyer. Skinning a coyote is a pain so unless you really want the hide I wouldnt bother with it. You throw the carcass away.
