Fellas / ladies: So I was fortunate enough this year to be able to head to Craig, Colorado to elk hunt for a week with a few buddies. It was a long drive from Pittsburgh, PA...but tons of fun. As we got to camp a full day early, we had plenty of time to get set up, shoot some arrows and get ready for an evening hunt. Although I ended up in the mix of some cows and bugles that first evening...no arrows were sent flying. The next morning, and really the beginning of my hunt, I got set up at the bottom of a canyon, positioning myself about 30 yards off and above a watering hole. At about 7:00 am, I saw a big bull crest the top of the canyon. My heart started to race! Even though he was roughly 400 yards away...I knew he was a shooter...the question really was whether or not he was going make it down the canyon in my direction. After about 45 mins...he did! Like a bolt of lightening...he ended up on a trail that lead directly to the watering hole I was watching...closing the gap in seconds! I quickly drew back, gave a slight cow mew...and let it fly! Gosh Darn It...my string hit my bino system strap adjustment and sent the arrow flying severly off course! Keeping my cool and acting swiftly, I knocked another arrow, drew back, put my 30 yard pin on him and let it rip! This time...I found the mark! I was fortunate to make a double lung hit...the bull went about 300 yards towards bedding at the end of the canyon. After a 5 hour wait...we went back, picked up the blood and found my first ever bull elk! He is a great 6x6...boy am I happy!
