Strut10
Remember this piece of genetic superiority from earlier this year?? Well....................... he's got company, now. How do I get sooooo lucky??????????
shockwave
Is that deer injured ?? It's hard to tell from those pics ?? An injury to his left rear leg might have caused the abnormal growth...
HUNTINGMAN
Good genetics for a non typical.
Strut10
Is that deer injured ?? It's hard to tell from those pics ?? An injury to his left rear leg might have caused the abnormal growth... Nope. Not injured. He's peeing on a scrape in that pic. I believe him to be this deer from last fall. That pic from last year was taken within about 60 yards of the one from last week. The deer's nose/face seem very similar. I think it's the same deer. I guess him at 3 1/2 this year...........maybe 4 1/2. I believe he's just a product of the shallow end of the gene pool.

You know what they say about one bad apple.
Strut10
Yep, and he should be "taken out" to the deep end. You know what they say about one bad apple. Agreed. But are either of those deer what you want to burn your only buck tag on??? Not me. A guy I know passed on the one in the snow picture a couple times last archery season because he didn't want to shoot anything that ugly. My best hope is, I guess, that they both step out in front of a coal truck down on the highway some morning.
toddyboman
A My best hope is, I guess, that they both step out in front of a coal truck down on the highway some morning. sorry.....but LOL at that. So in Penns...you are only allowed 1 buck tag? That stinks......Are they considered legal deer to shoot?
ruttinbuc
Yes, I keep forgetting we are not in Texas selling management hunts. If I knew the potential was there for a future of no ugly bucks I'd get everyone to burn their only tags. The sooner the better.
shockwave
I would be more worried about the genes hes passing on, we had a case of nice 8 pointers without eye guards. I killed 3 personally all together 8 in 3 years between my hunting buddies and i

Thanks, Gary.
Flintlock1776
I met Gary at a Grange meeting in Saylorsburg many years back. Nice guy and he had some adventures. I remember his slide show on the black bears in Lake Harmony area. That was a hoot!
ChrisSeb53
I'm from PA and I would be more than happy to burn my buck tag on either of those deer.. haha
Stickslinger
I don't think the deer in the pic from 11/01/2009 is the same deer in pic from 9/27/2010. The deer in the 2009 pic has a scruffy antler on his right side, the deer in the 2010 pic has a nice antler on his right side, that's a big change in a years time. If it is the same deer, maybe if he makes it another year his left side will fill out and look like the right side. Just my opinion and I could be wrong. Rodney The deer in the pic from 2009 did have two matching spikes. That pic is just one after he broke the one off. It does seem odd that a deer would go from a spike to a big, long-tined 4 in one year. But he's already got some age on him. I'm going to be talking to Dr. Charles Alsheimer in about a week and a half. Interested to hear his take on these two monster 5-pointers. TN Bucknasty
Probably a result of pedicle damage. Culling a free ranging herd is a waste of time. Research now is showing that the largest portion of the antler traits are being carried by does anyway.

As long as you're shooting does we'll eventually weed out bad genetics. They say don't worried about, because it's the last part of deer management that should take place opposed to all the others. hunter109
well if he was like that two years in a row shoot him to get him out of the herd man

They say don't worried about, because it's the last part of deer management that should take place opposed to all the others. So by that logic if a buck like that passes his genes on to his female offspring the chances of her bearing a buck fawn with those poor antler traits is probable then.. Irregardless he needs to be taken out of the herd to give the bucks with better antlers genes to breed...
arrow32
I'd say take him out. But with only one buck tag that be hard to do inless it was the last day.
