Tominator
Got a hit on a doe last night and trailed sparse blood for probably close to 800 yards. I was well off the property I had permission on and didn't feel comfortable trailing her much farther. I'm going to try and find the landowner today after school and continue the trail if I can find it. It rained quite a bit last night. From what I could tell of the blood I did find, it looked to be a muscle hit, probably shoulder or high in "the dead zone." Wish me luck. I hate wounding deer. I haven't done that in years, I guess I was due.
Buckhunter76
Good luck on finding her man, doesn't really sound good. Did you happen to see where you hit her?
c_lou
Good Luck with the tracking. Hope you can get her back.
Tominator
Good luck on finding her man, doesn't really sound good. Did you happen to see where you hit her? I'm shooting new arrows this year. 2 red fletch, 1 yellow, dark green nock with a flame wrap, and I can't see them hit. I'm thinking I might switch back to my goldtips. I'm not blaming the arrow, but in answer to your question, no. I'm guessing shoulder. At the shot, she wheeled and went down to the bottom of the field and ran and kind of hopped in about 3 circles before she trotted over to the property line. I'm guessing she was trying to shake that arrow loose, but I really don't know.
ruttinbuc
That sux! I went through that the first day here. I saw the hit through the back straps above the spine. I saw the one white fletch as it ran, but when she reappeared after some brush the fletch was gone. I never found that arrow. The doe I killed I watched the arrow run right through her. The blood went sparse there too. Even after the great hit. If you can find some hot pink nocks they show up well against the brown of a deer. I finally got around to putting tracer knocks on my FMJ's. BowTechTurkeyHunter sent a few with the arrows I won in buckee's hunt auction. I forgot all about them. I am not nuts about sending $ downrange, but we'll see how they do when I get a chance on Steve's dime this time.
redkneck
Sorry to hear that Chris. It happens to everyone. Hope you recover her, or she recovers one way or the other. I lost a coon Saturday if it helps your feelings He tried to get in the stand with me at dark, then finally left and I shot him and he left with my arrow. Last one I'll shoot

I watched 2 coons climb a cherry tree that was next to me. They both munched on choke cherries. Come to think of it, maybe they had ESP, because they had a front row seat to the shot not 20 minutes later. Thanks Tommy. I hope I can get ahold of the owner, and I hope they let us trail her. rhine16
I did the same thing on opening morning. Watched my arrow hit her in the "dead zone". Blood for a good 400 yards, then it just quit.

Tominator
All the blood was washed away last night, even the stuff under the tree canopy that was on the fence, which I found to be unbelievable. Needless to say, we found no blood, and pretty much went on a wing and a prayer walking a path in the beans where we could see deer had been walking with no luck. I'm 0-2 so far this season. buckee
That always sucks Chris, but it does happen to us all at one time or 3. All you can do now is hope, and if that don't work, don't kick yourself too hard. Just get back on the horse, and try again. I hope you find her. The_Kat
Sorry to hear that man. I dropped a doe in her tracks once with my .270. I aimed right at her neck and dropped her with the shot. I checked her through my scope and she was down for the count. I didn't walk to her, instead I got down and got my 4 wheeler. I came back and she was gone....no blood, just hair. It's a bad feeling, but thats part of hunting. I bet you nail the next one!
dbHunterNY
The thing is that it does happen. You're proficient though and tried your best to make an ethical shot. That's all one could ask.
Tominator
Thanks guys. Before Tom and I went looking, I went home, got the new arrows out, put practice broadheads on them and set the target out to 40 yards. I got a decent group each time. Then I moved the target to 35 and grouped them pretty good there too. Groupings could have been better, so I'll be practicing a lot more before I head to the woods again. I'm still not happy at all. Had hunting dreams all night........and none of them were good.
Jeramie
Sometimes those critters are just hard to kill and arent going to make it easy on you! The only doe I lost was smacked by a 30-30 at about 100 yards, bled like a stuck hog, and we lost blood after 200 - 250 yards. I know she was a dead deer walking from all of the blood but we never found her. It happens!
ruttinbuc
It is an awful feeling when you can't find deer. Amazing how many times you play the scene over in your mind. Then you start second guessing yourself about all if it. Then you begin to accept it for what it is and tell yourself what you need to do. Then you hope that you get that opportunity to redeem yourself. There will be more. Just a matter of keeping your head in the game at crunch time. Buckeyenut
Keep your head- it happens to everyone (sadly usually more than once). I arrowed a good 8 last year in the shoulder and didn't recover him- he showed up on camera 2 weeks later no worse for the wear. Oh, and he really has blown up this year! Crazy day on the farm yesterday! Rink passed a wide 10 that we have several photos of. He said he didn't like the tine length, but he's been second guessing ever since. Scott S. had a limb in his way of whacking a "tall- thick" 10 pointer. I saw 18 deer of which 13 were bucks- no shooters for me but a couple pretty decent 8's. arrow32
Hate to hear that. I had a year like that last year. I did that opening day and it haunted me the rest of the year it seemed like. Best of luck to you the rest of the season.

Yeah, I'm hoping I hit shoulder and she'll be OK. Sounds like Jefferson is doing good. I'm betting Rink will get over it. It's got to be a "no-doubter" to shoot a buck this early.
