Velvet

Recommended Posts

I have instances on Trail cameras where bucks have rubbed off all the velvet within a two hour period. When it's time, it can happen quickly. The antlers are fully developed beneath the velvet long before it is ever shed. I've seen this with deer that died during July and August. Even though there is a thick layer of skin and velvet making huge nobs on the tips and funny shapes, the horns are normally shaped underneath. The shedding of velvet is triggered by increased testosterone levels which can vary from deer to deer. I'm not sure what kind of information you're looking for here, but there's a little bit.
