Sheald
This past saturday I sat in stand from daylight to dark. About 2pm a nice buck came running by, I stoped him with a grunt call and he came in to 39 yds, but presented no shot, quartering too in the small bushes..Just saw his head..Two steps to clear and he was done. I was at full draw for at least a min. The buck backed out and moved down wind of my stand (about 15 min) then came back in behind me at 33 yds..Still could only see the head (Nice, Nice 9pt in the 240lb/ 160" range) Again at full draw, but presented no shot. Almost the same angle as the first time, but in the bushes, with absolutely no opening. If I would of forced an arrow in the kill zone, it would of deflected for sure off the bushes, and I didnt want to wound the deer. The second time he came in, the thought of shooting him in the head crossed my mind, but decided against it. Im shooting a grim reaper broad head, and have seen them go through metal barrels. Needless to say it was very dissapointing to be that close to the best buck with a bow (twice) only to not get a shot. Very, very frusturating. The boy would of been dead if it was rifle season!!!! cray8705
I had one similar to that last year, It was a nice 9 pt but he was about 55 yds out ( to long for me to be comfortable with a bow) and in some brush. If it woulda been gun season he woulda been down
Tony
you shouldnt be disappointed, you set up and had the buck within range. sometimes they just get lucky. if you keep after it, youll tag him. i had the same thing happen last year twice with a 160 class 10 point. had him at 28 yards, but wrong side of fence. Good Luck Tony
HUNTINGMAN
Situations like that are why I like bowhunting for deer mor than any other kind of hunting there is. I do gun hunt but being out there with a bow is much more exciting to me. You done the right thing by holding off on the shot,he may come back on your next sit and offer a perfect broadside shot, good luck with him. dartonman
Always better to do the right thing, than post you have been searching for three days after making a marginal shot.....you did the right thing, in due time you will kill him...al
kidd
the experience is part of hunting.....less then 10% of hunters ever get to experience what you did....smart move for sure!!!
redkneck
If you can stay in a stand from daylight to dark you are a better man than I. My tailbone is killing me after 3-4 hours.
bloodtrails
Thats why they call it hunting, If it were easy they'd call it killing! Hang in man you'll get one!:ninja:
Sheald
Oh I know I did the right thing, but being that close twice to a buck of that caliber is tough to get no shot! I have been at this for a lot of years, and know you dont get that many chances at a crafty ole buck like this boy. The bird hunters are starting to bang in the woods and that will drive these guys to go nocturnal. I like to bow hunt to get in the woods while the deer are still relatively relaxed, and its easier to patter the "big" bucks around food sources. Im gonna have to hope he falls in love and makes a mistake now im betting. Thanks for the words of encouragement though, I appreciate it. abear491
Agreed i would be disappointed to, but you had a great buck in front of you and if you didn't shoot at it.. it will still be there next time sounds like you had a great hunt
Jorden
I feel your frustration...I cant even get a doe to come close enough to shoot. I guess thats why its called hunting:bang:
arrow32
That problem has followed me for the last 2 years.lol The year before last really bad. I saw multiple shooter bucks and always they were just one step and they were dead or behind some brush or just to dang far. It got frustrating at times but was amazing to be seeing them.
