buckee
This would work so long as there is a rope that they can bring the boat back across the river with. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the rope tied to the back of the boat..LOL
gzilla45
Two hours twenty-seven minutes and about 19 pieces of scribbled on paper and I think I got it. It took the help of a few other responses but it makes sense now. Hopefully I can translate what I have scribbled down but the answer is 13 trips. I'm going to use the A, B...a, b approach that you mention. Capital letters are people and A is Lisa. 1. a, b, c cross. 2. a comes back 3. a, d crosses 4. a comes back 5. B, C, D cross 6. D, d comes back 7. A, a cross 8. C, c comes back 9. C,D,E cross 10. a comes back 11. a,e,d cross 12. a comes back 13. a, c cross The hardest part of this was realizing that you can't just dump everyone off on the other side and people were going to have to move back and forth. I think I got that finally after your response to my last answer. If this isn't right, I give up. It was at least a great way to kill time on a slow day at work. My head hurts now. The Kid
nope, there is no hidden things like the path you are thinking down. It is like the riddle of having a 3 gallon bucket and a 5 gallon bucket but you have to end with exactly 4 gallons of water. fill the 5 gallon bucket full of water, dump it into the 3 gallon bucket, leaving you with 2 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket, dump out the three gallon bucket and dump the 2 gallons that are in the 5 gallon bucket leaving you with 2 gallons in the 3 gallon bucket and 0 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket, fill up the 5 gallon buck and dump 1 gallon into the three gallon bucket leaving you with exactly 4 gallons :hammer1:
mikebohio
The 5 members of the Family family and their 5 dogs (1 for each family member) were hiking when they encountered a river to cross. They rented a boat that could hold 3 living things, people or dogs. Unfortunately, the dogs were tempermental. Each was comfortable only with it;s owner present and could not be near another person, not even momentarily, without its owner present. The dogs could be with other dogs however, without their owners. The crossing would have been impossible except that Lisa's dog could drive the boat. How was the crossing arranged? How many trips did it take? it only takes one trip!........lisa and her dog kills off everybody and then there is only two living things on the boat.
