Re: Is it wrong to use dogs to deer hunt with?

I have never hunted deer with dogs. Dogs are great for rabbits and squirrels but not ideal for deer. It usually pushes the deer too fast for anyone to get a good clear shot. If it is legal where you hunt, there is usually a reason for it being legal. Some areas are unusually hard to get to, and dogs are used to flush out the bedded deer.

I have no problem with using dogs if it is legal, I would just rather not... by my choice. .....popgun

I don't like when people use dogs to run deer. It takes a certain amount of skill and hardwork out of the hunt. Plus I have had more than one hunt ruined by the dogs milling around the woods or the hunters trying to recover their dogs. I say make it illegal! mad.gif

Re: Is it wrong to use dogs to deer hunt with?

This is a tough question to answer since I have never tried it. I'm sure it can be a pretty exciting way to hunt, but I have problems with it from several different aspects.

First of all, I have never been real big on running shots at deer. As I understand it, that is usually the kind of shots taken with dog-chased deer.

Second, I would think it would be pretty disruptive to the hunting of others who chose not to use dogs. I would think that for still hunters and stand hunters who have put in a lot of time scouting, and trying to pattern their deer this kind of hunting would completely screw up all their hours of efforts. I don't think it is right for hunters to ruin the hunt for other hunters any more than it is for anti-hunters to harrass hunters.

Over-all, I suspect that it is probably a bad practice, but I'm sure there are parts of the country where it has become a tradition.

Like I said, it's a pretty tough question. Here in NY, if it was to be considered for legalization, I would fight it.

Re: Is it wrong to use dogs to deer hunt with?

fisherguy - pretty sure it is legal in Ont. I know some guys who do it in Kenora.

I would never use them to push with. I have used dogs to track after a shot though. You can have no hunting equipment with you at all, besides a knife

BUT......you must have a dog that will heal up. Running after a wounded deer is not a good idea. My dog actually just found his first one the other day for a buddy doing archery. He was close by and it was getting dark so he gave me a call. The cool thing is that you only need basic training, and the instinctive nose does the rest! We found the deer at about 9pm at night.....would have taken us much longer than that without him. His nose is so good.....and I made sure to blaze him up!

Not legal here. I really prefer to hunt where I have a chance on a somewhat relaxed deer either coming through the woods on a trail or feeding in my fields. Just dont think shooting an adrenaline pumped deer running from dogs would be for me.

I think it is only wrong if your are doing it illegally. I dont dog hunt and I dont want them around our lease. But in the swamps down here it is a little different type of hunting. The deer can hear you comming for a long distance and you will never see them so you have to have something to make them move. Also if you have 5000 ac of land then no problem. When you have 200 ac of land and do it you will not keep the dogs on your land. If it is done properly I have no problem with it but it is not for me. I did kill my first 3 deer with dogs 30 something years ago and I can remember that like it was yesturday. It was awsome to here the dogs comming your way just thinking you might see a deer or get a shot. Back then you could go weeks and not see a deer. I was just a kid and I would not trade that experiance for anything. smirk.gif

Re: Is it wrong to use dogs to deer hunt with?

I do not (not legal here) and would not hunt deer with dogs. If you were raised in an area where this is a legal and often used practice I am sure you would think it is perfectly fine. My problems with it are that the dogs are the ones doing the hunting not the "hunter", the dogs do not stop at property lines, the shooting is mostly done at fasting moving targets (at road crossings most probably), deer have fairly low stamina levels and I am sure that often they get pulled down by the dogs, the dogs chase all deer not just the doe or buck that is legal, and lastly, anyone out there trying to really hunt for their deer has their hunt ruined. Hunting deer with dogs should, in my opinion, not be legal anywhere.

I'm sure it would be different for the hunter who actually got the deer, but if somebody showed me a huge buck that they got by using dogs, I would have the same reaction as I would seeing a huge buck killed with a truck.

Both showed good aim and nothing more. grin.gif

Like many others said, if it's legal then fine, i won't judge. If I'd have grown up using them then it'd seem perfectly normal to me, I wasn't so it doesn't. On the other hand, some people may find things we do in Saskatchewan questionable, it's a matter of geographic location and past methods. If it were legal here however, i wouldn't do it, I think it puts undue stress on the deer.

Re: Is it wrong to use dogs to deer hunt with?

I don't have a problem with legal, ethical dog hunting for deer. However, the only dog hunters that I have ever been privaliged to be around do not do either. It has been my experience that dog hunters are a bunch of drunken, inbread morons with no reguard for state laws, land boundrys, safty or what they shoot at. My father in law hunts with dogs, he does it legally to my knowledge, but none of the guys in his camp do. If it weren't for him, my opinion would be to outlaw it. For the simple fact that I've never seen it done in a legal or ethical way.

From what I hear from other "real" hunters in the state that seems to be the norm.
