Who else thinks the BMI is a crock? We hear all these stats on how the nation is so obese (which it is, lol) but based on the bmi, I am a total lardbutt (which may be true)..... but, I'd have to drop down to about 150 to be average for that stupid scale at which point I would look like I just stepped out of a concentration camp. Last time I really lost weight, I worked out a lot and ate right and got down to 190 about two years ago. Hardly an ounce of belly fat left behind, yet I still had to drop at least 30 more lbs to get in the non-overweight category according to the bmi.

Where do you stack up?

It's not a crock, merely a reminder of how out of shape we let ourselves become. That BMI is not even close to accurate though just so you know. True BMI is figured on several measurements, not just height and weight. A real BMI takes frame, and muscle mass into account along with weight, height, waist size, etc.

I'm far from fat, but I am overweight. I need to shed about 15-20lbs. I'm working my butt off to get there!

6'4" and 185 lbs. right where i want to be

6'4" 180lbs, = 21.9 BMI, looks about normal for me.

OK, maybe it's a crock for most of us that don't hit the 6-0 mark.

I'm 5-10 and about 230. I seriously need to drop 20-25lbs, but in no way shape or form can I get to the "normal" range without looking like a freak show.

Kyle I get your point, but I was just refering to the calculator there that most of the gov't stats are based on.

29.1 Im bordering on Obese. Thats a LOAD too. Granted I need to lose about 15 more but Im nowhere near obese. I carry a lot more mass than most guys my height. At my best I had abs, a chest, and big arms. I could run 6-miles and never stop for a breath. According to the BMI I was overweight then at 185.

Conditions are not taken into account. Its simply a formula that blankets everyone based on height and weight.

A better way to judge your bmi is your belly. A belly is the worst area to be fat in and the easiest to get. Your belly holds Lotsa water which is bad for your heart. I know alot of folks who aren't fat, but have big bellies. My dad has toned arms and legs but a pregnant lady gut. It's not good at all. Your stomach should be flat if your in good shape. If it's not you could stand to lose a few lbs. I'm not fat or obese, but I got a belly and am overweight because of it.
