buckee
Here are some pictures from an outing that Steve Beilgard, his grandson(kaeden), and Friends James and Tammy took in Alaska this past July 7/28/2010 James and Tammy took Steve Beilgard, his grandson(kaeden) fishing and Whale Watching What an awesome show. The Whales came pretty close to look them over. (we were as close as 50 yards) notice the open mouths full of herring. there were 7 whales in the group. they will deep dive around a school of baitfish, then swim in cirlces letting out air. the bubbles form a "cage", trapping the baitfish in a cell of bubbles. the whales will then, all together, crash to the surface inside the bubble cage, with mouths agape, and enjoy a dinner. these mammels "hunt" in packs and work together. the baleen traps the food and lets the water out. simply AMAZING !!! Steve and grandson(kaeden) from Gillette WY are in the skiff in the background the flapping on the surface is simply the whales letting out the water and swallowing their food, about a 30 second process. What a thrill. I'm pretty sure these are Humpback Whales. Maybe Steve can verify yep, humpies. they came up too close on different occasions. this is one of those, and we're back about 50 yards. i prefer a couple hundred yards. i'd see whales within 100 yards of my front door at times. what a thrill.
