The_Kat
Today has been one of the best/worst days I've ever had in the deer woods. Traditionally my family ranch is just a doe killer, occasional scrub buck kinda place. We usually see one good buck a year, and no one ever gets a shot at him. This morning I saw in our pecan grove....a place I rarely hunt due to limited action. About 30 mins after light I see two does feeding to me. I watch them feed off into the woods, and maybe a minute later I look up to see a monster buck crossing the clearing. He is a good poke out there, but I steady and shoot. I see nothing but smoke of course. I wait a few mins and decided to go look for sign. I heard the bullet smack through the trees when I shot, so I was pretty sure I missed. I did no reload before loweing my rifle. I get the gun to the ground and make my first step down on my climber when I look to the left and there the buck stands at 60 yards walking back the way he came in originally. My guns on the ground unloaded. Need less to say I watched him dissappear and never got another shot. This deer was the best buck I've ever seen on the place. So this evening I decided to move my climber, and then proceeded to hunt a large field I used to hunt with my dad when I was a kid. Our old tree we used was grown up pretty bad, so I elected to sit at the base of the tree instead. The entire hunt came and went with no action. Once the sun set the temps dropped big time. Just about when I gave up, I noticed a tail flicker in font of me 120 yards away. I throw my gun up and sure enough theres two does. Right behind them is the NEW biggest deer I've ever seen on this place. I take aim, fire, and see the buck take off slowly through the smoke. Light was fading fast, and it was dang near dark by the time I reached where the deer last stood. I did manage to find some hair and blood which I followed 30-40 yards and then lost. I decided not to chance it and backed out to go back in in the morning when I could see better. The distance and the hair scare me into thinking I may have burned his belly. The blood was super scarce. If I missed out on two monsters in one day then I'm hanging it up.....both of these bucks were easily my best bucks ever. The one tonight was what your dreams are made of............. I hope to report back with a happy ending, but my gut has this awful feeling in it. clrj3514
WOW hope you either grazed him or find him! Gotta reload as soon as you shoot! Good luck bud.
92xj
No blaming me!!!!!!!! I am 97.9956% sure of my numbers I gave you. I would shoot them. And, by your standards, you cant hang it up. You said if you missed both deer you were hanging it up. Clearly you didnt miss the second one since you found hair and blood. Find a neighbor with a dachshund (wiener dog). By far the best deer/blood tracking dog out there. Better than a bloodhound in all my experience, as well as many of old folks I used to hunt with. wtnhunt
Man that is too bad Kyle. Hope he is still alive and you get another crack at him. Only experience I have had with a tracking dog was last fall away from home. Person used a dachshund there too, but they were not successful on finding that deer. MCH
I know you don't have the whole season left to hunt, but the hunting just gets better each passing day. By the end of the week, them big boys will have forgotten about your gun shot and will be chasing anything that they catch a whiff of. BearClaw
Hang in there, it's in our blood. I missed a doe at 20 yard a few weeks ago with the bow and got so sick about it and disgusted with myself I couldn't pick up a hunting magazine or watch the outdoor channel. I fianlly got over it, shot my bow and gained my confidence back and now I'm back at it. Give it a few days and you'll want to get back out there! Ethan Givan
Hang in there, it's in our blood. No doubt. There have been times in the past where I swore I was quitting. I was gonna sell my stuff and find a new hobby, but then the crisp air of a fall morning gives me the urge to set in a tree again. I cant help but hunt. Sorry to hear about your day Kyle, but everyone has a day like that. Look at the positive side, there are two really nice bucks around and in a couple days they will have forgotten all about it. Heck I havent even seen a shooter on the hoof yet this year, but you have seen two! Get back out there.

Shaun_300
That sucks Kyle. Keep at it bud, don't give up! I'd set a target up to make sure your gun is hitting bang on. It'd be a shame to think it's fine, miss another big buck, then shoot it to find out it's off.
The Kid
hey bud, it ain't over till it's over!!!
c_lou
Keep after it. It sucks when you miss a big one, let alone two, but tis the time of year where them deer have short memories and a one track mind. Plus it's Oklahoma, there's a giant behind every tree. Rhino
Sorry to hear you didn't get your hands wrapped around either one of those bucks. Like others have said...it's just going to get better and those bucks have does on their minds. Now cowboy up and go back after them!
