Buddy Snapped Pics of a Monster

I called one of my best friends this afternoon to wish him luck for tomorrow's opener for Ontario's gun season for deer. He was unsure as to where to hunt this week. It was either going to be at his house, or at the camp he belongs to. He took his Cuddeback out last week and set it up at the camp he is a member in.

He checked the pics on the camera yesterday, and he had a monster captured on film on Thursday. It was a 17 pointer, if you count all the kickers (some of the kickers may be less than 1"). I used the picture of the deer's head to guage its length and compared it to the length of the mainframe G2s and G3s on both sides. I have a deer mount here at home and measured the lenght of its head from nose to the top of the head and measured it at 13". If the picture of my buddy's buck is similar in size to my mount, then the G2s and G3s, which are longer than the deer's head, are somewhere around 13" to 14" in length, possibly longer. Using the same reference, I estimated the inside spread at or near 28". I'll be interested if he gets it to see if my measurements are in the ball park.

His wife sent me an email entitled:

OMG

I think she was right.

He's decided to hunt at the deer camp this week!

I'll post the pics in a week or so, as I don't want to show them without his permission. I mean like, you know the old addage, I could show them to you now........but then I'd have to kill you!!!!!!!!!! :gun_bandana:

Just kiddin', but I do want to ask him before I post his pictures.

I did a little more measuring on the pictures with a set of calipers and measuring tape. Of course I made some estimations of the deer's body size based on posted average measurements. I used 42" as "ground to back" height, then created a chart of measurements based on that and superimposed the antlers onto that chart.

If I have it anywhere close to actual size, then it should score somewhere in excess of 190 using the B&C Non-Typical measurement system.

O.K. I asked his wife if she minded if I posted the picture. She said it was O.K.

It's a main-frame 11 pointer with 6 kickers. I had a face-on picture that allowed me to get measurements from a different perspective too.

My buddy just called me on his cell phone not 5 minutes ago.

HE GOT HIM!

He just shot him 15 minutes ago and was just standing over the buck. He could barely talk he was so excited. I tried asking him a few questions about the size, but his voice was quivering. I congratulated him and am picking his wife up later this evening to drive her out to his camp to take a look at it and get some pictures. Rest assured I'll be taking a tape measure with me.

Just got back from his camp. He is one happy hunter!

Anyhow, took a few more pictures, but it was hanging. I always like the pictures right after finding the animal and in the woods. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my memory stick so I couldn't copy his pictures taken right after he got this buck around 4:30 this afternoon. I'll get his woodsy pictures tomorrow and post them. Here's a picture I took tonight:

I was little off on my estimations for the antler measurements, but he still scored pretty good. 'hoosierhunter' was close to the mark at 180. I took some measurements tonight, but it was dark, cold and the deer was hanging upside down. I got a score of 183, but I expect that could go 1 or 2 inches either way after a thorough measurement under better conditions and with good scoring utensils.

He was as I stated, an 11 point main frame. He had 6 kickers, but only 3 of them qualified for scoring. 3 of the kickers were under 1" (at least with a quick look) and weren't scoreable. Under better conditions and properly scored, one or two of them might just qualify. Longest tine was 13" (G2 Left), inside spread 21", tip to tip spread 14 4/8", left main beam 24", right main beam 26 4/8", and greatest circumference was 5 5/8".

He field dressed 225 lb with a small of the neck circumference of 26".

My estimations yesterday were based on the Cuddeback pictures and an assumption that his "ground to back height" was 42". All yesterdays antler estimations were based on that 42" measurement as a reference, but in reality he was 40" which threw out my scale. I also couldn't count the 3 x <1" kickers.

I gave him a hearty and well deserved congratulations!

I'm assuming that was the gross. Heck the net doesn't matter because he's a straight monster buck!!!

Because he had a bunch of non-typical points, I scored him as a non-typical, which basically means you use no deductions. I'm gon'na score him as a typical as well to see where he sits in that catagory. Just off the top of my head I think he'll be in the 160s due to side-to-side deductions, as well as those kickers.
