How many zeros in a billion? This is too true to be funny.

The next time you hear a politician use the

Word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about

Whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,

But one advertising agency did a good job of

Putting that figure into some perspective in

One of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were Living in the Stone Age.

D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, At the rate our government Is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain...

let's take a look at New Orleans ...

It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator,

Mary Landrieu (D)

Is presently asking Congress for

250 BILLION DOLLARS

To rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number...

What does it mean?

A. Well .. If you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans

(every man, woman, and child)

You each get $516,528.

B. Or... If you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets$1,329,787..

C. Or... If you are a family of four....Your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington , D. C

I had a nice conversation with a woman that called the house yesterday afternoon, she was with a Democratic committee that was promoting their candidate for Ohio's governor. She urged me to get out and vote on Tuesday, I told her that I was for sure going to vote, but I'd be voting Republican. We had a nice conversation about health care, illegal’s, massive amounts of spending, how much of a witch Pelosi is (I think this is when she thought to herself she couldn't talk me into a vote for her candidate, and hung up on me..... :D )

As a Canadian who lives directly on the Can/US border, I tend to pay attention to issues affecting the USA and even listen to some of the political and economic news Stateside. I recall back in the 80s during the Reagan years, how he effectively used "painting a picture" to talk to the public. I recall how he once referred to debt amounts, by saying the amount was equal to dollar bills placed end for end and how far through space, or how many times to the moon and back it would stretch.

Politicians tend to throw numbers out at will, and their nonchelante attitude, as you've mentioned, gives you the impression, "Oh heck, that's not much!". But putting things into perspective as to how we can relate to just how massive some of these amounts, or debts are, is a step in realizing that hosterity programs are not only coming, but may also be a neccessity.

Back in the 90s, Canada was in an out of control debt whirlpool. The amounts weren't quite as staggering as the US numbers we see today, but on a per capita basis, and given the economic numbers of that time, we were basically going to be throwing our debtload onto our children and grandchildren for decades to come.

The government of the time took some drastic cost cutting measures and tax increases that were pills that were hard to swallow. Paul Martin, who eventually became Canada's Prime Minisister, was the Finance Minister at the time of the hosterity measures, and was the curse of most Canadians citing hard times. But as we look back on those times and the actions of Mr. Martin, we can only say, "Good Job Paul!". Canada is said to be the envy of the world's G7. The basis for our economic stability was sewn 15 or more years ago when they bit the federal financial bullet. Even today, Paul Martin is called for conculting with some of the hardest hit European countries to ask him how he not only came up with his debt reduction plan, but also how he sold it to the Canadian public.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's current ruling Conservatives in Canada, are reaping the favourable economic accolades of Paul Martin's Liberals of over a decade ago. Unfortunately for Obama, irregardless of whether you're pro or con for his policies and actions, he is the beneficiary of the mess he was left with from the previous administration. My take on his being able to dig the USA out a 3 trillion dollar national debt, is that it will take possibly a decade or more to see positive results.

I wish whomever has the leads in the USA the best of luck, because it's a known fact that where the US economy goes, so goes Canada!

So what they are saying is a trillion hours ago the earth was just a speck of dust on an unnamed star waiting to explode billions of years later.

No Mike, a trillion hours is JUST;) around 114 million years, give or take 100,000 years or so.

Unless of course you are talking about it exploding in the future, then you may be 100% correct.:surrender:
