ruttinbuc
Hey everyone, I have watched deer in a spot close to home all summer and was saving it for later, but bored as I was I just had to go out today. Besides you always hear of Halloween success stories. I left the house at 4:45PM hoping the wind would lay down. I had a great experience tonight. Heading to the spot into the wind I had to break through a tangle of honeysuckle to get to a little strip of cut corn. I put my arrow back in the quiver to go through and wouldn't you know it a big bodied 8 point comes through the fence row on the other side and is looking the other way at 30 yards. I froze, but he ends up seeing me and runs back the way he came. What timing!!! Anyway, I hustled down along the thin strip and made it to a tractor path to the field the deer ran to. Kicking myself for blowing it by leaving late I made my way to a little strip of woods overlooking another field of cut corn that had an island of thicket 65 yards in front of me. I found a good hide dead center of it and cleared any obstructions for sight and noise. Not long after settling in for a hopeful sit I looked to see a rack buck come out of the back side and headed to a thick fence row to my right. My thought was that it was the buck I spooked. Not 5 minutes later a group of doe and fawns come out of the edge I was sitting in and made their way into the corn and fed some, but were interested in the fence row the buck ran into. It is getting dark and I look to see the buck come out of the row and run the lead doe up the hill. Just as fast he came back down and harassed another doe that came out of that fence row to play. I hit the long can and the buck looked, but didn't care. He went back to dogging the doe back into the thick row. It wasn't long and he was back patrolling the edge. I hit my little mouth call with contact grunts and again, he looked. By now it is pretty close to last light. Most of the deer in the field started migrating toward the little island of thicket. The buck, who was moving with them, made his way to the edge of that island, turned and started walking right to me. I looked hard at the rack and realized it wasn't the big guy, but a decent buck just the same. Besides just the way it all played out had me pull the string on him. He came to 10 yards, sort of looked, ignored me or didn't see me and then made his last mistake. He turned right and I hit him right through the lungs clipping the bottom of his heart. He took off across the strip and all I could see was tail over tin cups, a flip flop and done. The does and fawns were wondering what happened. They came back after the commotion and stood over him. The bigger doe made her way to my blinking tracer nock. Curious, but obviously a bit confused. After I settled down and pulled my emotions together. I walked over and fetched the arrow and then to the deer. There was a little ground shrinkage, but I can not be more pleased with this buck. After the early season and first archery in a new spot on that county land and all that went on there trying for a giant. I realized just how much I forgot what bow hunting is all about! My heart was pounding just as hard with this buck walking right to me as any. They all can't be giants! It is all about the hunt regardless, of what the hype artists have you believe. My thoughts have also been influenced by where I find myself today. I desperately need to find reasonable work. The time spent chasing these wonderful creatures can be all consuming. I will be going to Maryland's Eastern Shore for my contest hunt as soon as I get the call. Hopefully, I'll have another hunting adventure to share. ruttinbuc
Thanks everyone. I hope to get back out a few times with my camera and try to catch some of the rutting action on digital media, lol! The bucks are running crazy with this snap of cold weather. Temperature makes all the difference in the world, but the wind direction is key also. A great time to be putting seat time in the stand. The longer you can sit the better off you will be.
