col3
Ok, so i took a shot at a buck tonight.. 20-25 yards it was pretty dark, aimed at his vitals, let him have it, it made the noise an arrow makes when you hit a deer, and he turned aroud and walked back across the feild he came across to get to me, with his tail down, very slowly, and i watched him till i couldnt see him anymore, he had walked about 200 yards, he looked back once.. but he kept his tail down the whole time. I feel really good about the shot, but from my description, what do you guys think? He sure acted like a mortaly wounded deer to me, but some input from some more experienced hunters would be greatly appreciated.
MCH
Sounds like a gut shot to me. Hopefully he bedded down and you'll find him in the morning.
ruttinbuc
Sounds like it may be a a paunch and liver hit. What way he was standing when you took the sot and did you retrieve the arrow. Need to find that arrow to be sure. They can go a long way on a liver hit. A paunch hit would have him humped a little. A shot quartered away can hit back and low clipping the liver and staying in the guts. What did it sound like when it hit?
col3
He was right broadside, it made a loud thump when it hit him.
ruttinbuc
I'd let him lay until morning and then do a sight search. The paunch is all mass and that is the sound you would more than likely get. The paunch will also hold the arrow. Lungs shots not hitting a rib will give you a phiiittt sound. Nothing in the lungs but air exhaling or inhaling.
col3
Its so hard to describe the sound, the way you described the way a lung shot should sound, sounds like the way this shot sounded.. it did sound like it hit bone, but its so hard to describe a sound like this to someone

He needs to lay and you need to find that arrow and see what's on it.
stcif
Gut shot. Hopefully you can find him in the morning. A lung shot deer shouldn't walk away slowly and shouldn't go 200 yards. Like others have said, could be liver also. Did you find any hair on the ground?
col3
went back, coulndt find blood, couldnt find the arrow, i was on the ground and he was in some taller grass that would swallow up an arrow and make it very hard to find if it passed right through, it was to dark to really see anything, so with no arrow, im not sure where to g from here, i guess il go look for blood in daylight and then go check te bush he ran to for some blood or hopefully him in a bed. huntnfish
Could have been a gut shot like most everyone else said. Wait till morning and go look for him then. That will give him time to expire.
col3
Found the arrow, totaly submerged in water all night, found some white hair witha little bit of brown in it, covered in blood, and three other little spots of blood with nothing else, gonna go look once more still because i want to be positive im not letting a deer go to waste
Ethan Givan
Sounds like a gut shot from the deer's reaction. I dont know if this would work now that the arrow set in water all night, but you can usually smell the arrow and tell if its gut shot. You might have got some liver since the arrow is coated in blood. Hope you find it.
ruttinbuc
The water did not dissolve the blood?
layin on the smackdown
Heres my 2 cents....you need to get all your buddies, neighbors and relatives and do a search and rescue mission to find that deer...he's dead (whether it was a gut shot or liver shot) and laying out there somewhere...search near water, thickets and bottoms if you have any...Even if it was a gut shot, im pretty sure he's toast by now and as long as nothing bumped him overnight, you should be able to recover him, and im guessing he did't go too far...Good luck... hunter109
well sounded like a gut shot but i could not tell you because i ant there with the arrow or at the spot you hit the deer real ease to tell if it is a gut hit
pointing_dogs_rule
Sounds like a gut shot to me. Hopefully he bedded down and you'll find him in the morning. DITTO good luck to all the dog
hoosierhunter
yeah it's 99.9% that deer is already dead and laying out there somewhere probably within about 500 yards of your shot as long as nothing bumped him. Let others said it's time to do a grid search with as many people as you can get to help.
col3
The arrow was pretty much clean(from being in water for 12 hrs) except for what looked like a little bit of fat on it, and it felt greasey, long after i had it out of the water, the blood is also hard to follow because there is lots of water in the feild, but i went through the bush today, back and forth, gonna have to go out again tomorrow and try, problem is its on another persons property, who gave me permission, but hes a hunter and its hunting heaven, bucks galore, there was 15 on the feild when i shot at the one last night, so he may not want lots of people tearing through his bush, two days before the rifle season starts and he can start hunting there. msman825
I would have made a rangements with him where when he came out of the woods this morning i'd be going in , did you go look today for it??

Rem308
How'd this turn out? Any luck? I can understand not wanting to really load up the property with people, but you could go solo and just take a long time to grid it out. Good thing you didn't go after him right away and pulled out for the night. I hope he didn't go too far, and you find him in the morning. Try to get some sleep eh
