tclubbs2
Saturday morning I was in a stand and had just shot a doe. I was letting her sit a bit before I climbed down to find her. I heard a deep grunt so I threw a grunt back. He grunted again. This time I grunted and followed with a rattle. All the sudden I heard a freight train coming right at me from behind my stand. Then he stopped. I waited and waited but nothing. I never heard anything else. Should I have grunted again when he stopped or did I do the right thing but wasn't convincing enough? Btw, I made a nice shot on the doe and found her within 75 yards of the shot.

Tominator
I would have probably tried a snort wheeze in that situation.

TN Bucknasty
First, I would have soiled myself. Next, I would have come up with a new plan.
Rhino
I would have probably tried a snort wheeze in that situation. Me too provided he's not too close to peg your position in the tree. If he was too close, I would have wheesed at him when he started to walk away.
wtnhunt
Sounds like he may have had you pegged at a certain point, in which case no call would have likely worked. Think with the dead doe out in front I might have been inclined to have tried a bleat from a can call. My snort wheezes attempts here don't seem to work so well. Had a similar situation in Wisconsin last fall, but could see the buck and he was going away from me. Got him to stop, but never could get him to come in range. pointing_dogs_rule
I agree, sounds as though he had you pegged. Nothing would have worked. good luck to all the dog
arrow32
I would have tried a snort weeze if anything.
bwana72
Every situation is different. I think you have to "feel them out". You may have done everything perfectly, he just wasn't going to come in. Or, like some of the others said, he may have had you pegged and you didn't know it. Or, a quick snort wheeze may have brought him charging in so hard that he ended up in the treestand with you. If there were a clear set of rules it would be pretty boring. hoosierhunter
Sounds like he may have had you pegged at a certain point, in which case no call would have likely worked. . That was my thought. If you could hear the grunt he was likely waaaaayyyy to close to hit that rattle bag unless there was a terrain barrier. GoshenGrunter
If he had you pegged, you were done. Come back another day in a new tree and try again. He's in the area for a reason! Maybe next time a snort wheeze, or a bleat depending on the phase of the rut. Tough situation though. Sometimes all you can do Is close your eyes and pray he keeps coming. Ravin R10 man
I guess I would have been turned around to see what he was doing before I even grunted the first time...it sounds like you never had sight of him at any time..and were calling by sound...he pegged you big time..and snuck outta there!
