What would you do?

Saturday morning I was in a stand and had just shot a doe. I was letting her sit a bit before I climbed down to find her. I heard a deep grunt so I threw a grunt back. He grunted again. This time I grunted and followed with a rattle. All the sudden I heard a freight train coming right at me from behind my stand. Then he stopped. I waited and waited but nothing. I never heard anything else. Should I have grunted again when he stopped or did I do the right thing but wasn't convincing enough? Btw, I made a nice shot on the doe and found her within 75 yards of the shot.

Sounds like he may have had you pegged at a certain point, in which case no call would have likely worked. Think with the dead doe out in front I might have been inclined to have tried a bleat from a can call. My snort wheezes attempts here don't seem to work so well.

Had a similar situation in Wisconsin last fall, but could see the buck and he was going away from me. Got him to stop, but never could get him to come in range.

Every situation is different. I think you have to "feel them out". You may have done everything perfectly, he just wasn't going to come in. Or, like some of the others said, he may have had you pegged and you didn't know it. Or, a quick snort wheeze may have brought him charging in so hard that he ended up in the treestand with you. If there were a clear set of rules it would be pretty boring.
