Starter SRL Camera?

Does anyone have any recommendations on a nice Digital SRL camera for a beginner?

I'm just looking for something that I can play with and use for taking better quality pictures to go along with my writing. I've heard a lot of good about the Canon Rebel XSi and I've seen some very nice pictures from it. So far that's been the leading recommendation, but I'm still searching about and I'm in no rush to get one right away, but hopefully soon.

Any advice? :)

When I was shopping around I just went with Nikon because that's what Dave shoots.:smoke:

I got the D-3000 and I'm more than happy with it shooting everything from portraits, sceneries, wildlife and festive occaisions.

I chose the Nikon over the Canon just because it looked simpler to opperate to this dumby and they were on sale.

When I got it home and took the time to learn it some, there are a whole mess of "in- cam options" to play with including zoomed crops, effects, touch ups, color balance, filters, B&W conversions etc....etc...

The 2 kit lenses that came with the package deal were enough to get me started from 18mm-200mm for most all my basic needs, but that doesn't stop me from wanting more glass in my bag. That's something you may want to take into consideration is the lens prices for each model should you wish to upgrade in the future. Now would be a good time to do that research.

Enjoy whichever cam you pick and be sure to post some pics!

From what I've seen - you pretty much can't go wrong with either of the big brand names like Nikon or Canon. You will see more of a difference in your pics with the glass you put on the body than you will the brand of camera. Just my opinion.

A good place to do some research prior to buying one is www.dpreview.com

they have all kinds of info on just about every camera.. A great reference.

you can take a look at my pbase site - all of these shots were taken with Nikon gear.

Take care

Dave

I have a Canon rebel XSi and it is no doubt one of the best things I have ever bought. I have it with me all the time when I am hunting. The battery life is very good, it takes GREAT pictures. And this was my first camera and it is VERY easy to use. It doesnt take long to figure out all the settings. But I was having the same problem, trying to decide between Canon and Nikon. I looked at both of them but one thing that I found was that the Canon seemed alot more simple and easy to use. It is also a very common camera so its easy to find stuff for it. Like lens, filters, ect. Heres a few of the better pictures that I have took with it. Just so you can see how it is.

This was one of the first pics I took with it.
