Fighting, predator attacks, who knows? At the taxidermy shop, you wouldn't believe how many stab wounds , scars, and broken bones from fighting I see that people never even notice. Something else that is pretty common is to find old bullets or broadheads in deer. I hate deer that are killed in swamps because about half the time, they dull my fleshing blade because there will be old shot just under the hide where duck hunters have been blasting away at them. I've found several bullets encased in scar tissue. I even found one .22 bullet embedded between a bucks eyes where the bone had grown around it. Broadheads or pieces of them are a common find, too, I've seen a couple of does that had lived for months with an entire arrow sticking out of them. One had an arrow lodged behind her jaw, the other in her spine. Both had been in there long enough that scar tissue had encased the broadheads. It's pretty amazing what a deer can withstand. Just a few weeks ago, I killed a doe that looked like she had a softball under the skin on her back leg from an old break. The whole leg was crooked, but she never limped or did anything unusual.
